Angels outlast Mariners
Jun 21, 2013 - 6:10 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Alberto Callaspo forced in the winning run with a walk in the eighth inning as the LA Angels of Anaheim took a 10-9 win over the Seattle Mariners to wrap up a four-game set.Mark Trumbo hit a three-run home run while Peter Bourjos went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and three runs scored for the Angels, who took three of four in the series. Mike Trout was 4-for-4 with a run scored.
Tommy Hanson lasted just two-plus innings in the start, giving up six runs on six hits. Scott Downs (1-2) grabbed the win for getting the final out of the eighth.
Kyle Seager was 4-for-5 with a two-run home run, three RBI and three runs scored and Raul Ibanez added two RBI for the Mariners, who have dropped four of five.
Felix Hernandez was tagged for a season-high seven runs -- six earned -- on 12 hits in just five innings of work.
The Angels had trailed by seven runs twice in the game and had rallied to tie the game, but went down by a run when the Mariners scored in the top of the eighth.
With Carter Capps (2-2) on the mound in the bottom of the eighth, Bourjos singled, stole second and scored on an Erick Aybar single. Trout then punched a hit to left and Yoervis Medina took the mound.
Albert Pujols then hit a grounder to second and Aybar was tagged out at home. After Trumbo was issued a free pass, Howie Kendrick smacked a pitch to short that saw the force out at home. Callaspo, though, was walked on four pitches and Pujols trotted home for a 10-9 lead.
Ernesto Frieri locked down the win by retiring the Mariners in order in the ninth, striking out the final two batters for his 17th save of the season.
A Nick Franklin single in the first was followed by a two-run home run from Seager as the Mariners jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead.
Seattle got to Hanson again in the third inning as Kendrys Morales and Ibanez hit consecutive RBI singles to chase the starter from the game.
Garrett Richards then took over, and run-scoring fielder's choices from Justin Smoak and Brendan Ryan made it a 7-0 game.
The Angels got one back in the third when Aybar brought in Chris Iannetta from third with a groundout to first.
The Mariners, though, got the run back in the fourth as Ibanez's second RBI single of the game made it an 8-1 contest.
A sac fly off the bat of Josh Hamilton in the fourth cut LA's deficit to six, and the team made it a one-run game in the fifth.
Bourjos led off the frame with his third homer of the year. Consecutive singles from Aybar and Trout preceded an RBI single from Pujols. Trumbo then crushed a pitch over the wall in center for his 17th home run of the season and an 8-7 game.
With Danny Farquhar on the mound to start the sixth, the Angels tied the game as Bourjos led off with a single, moved to second on a sac bunt from Aybar and later came home on a Pujols single.
The Mariners briefly went on top in the eighth when Ryan singled off Kevin Jepsen to start the frame, and later scored after Seager doubled off of Downs for a 9-8 advantage.
