A's, Mariners set for rubber match

Jun 23, 2013 - 1:25 PM (Sports Network) - Jarrod Parker will try for his fifth consecutive winning decision on Sunday as the Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners face off in the rubber match of their weekend series at Safeco Field.

Parker has been one of the American League's hottest pitchers, allowing two earned runs or less in five straight starts to lower his ERA to 4.30. He was spectacular yet again his last time out against the Rangers on June 18, allowing just three hits, two walks and two earned runs in seven innings to earn the win.

The former first-round pick has allowed just 15 hits in 28 1/3 innings in June.

Parker faced the Mariners at Safeco Field on May 11, claiming the win by allowing three runs in 6 1/3 innings.

For Seattle, Jeremy Bonderman's improbable comeback story continues. After missing all of 2011 and 2012 while recovering from various injuries and Tommy John surgery, Bonderman has landed on his feet with the Mariners and is 1-1 with a 3.28 ERA in four starts since joining the rotation.

Since yielding seven runs in his season debut, Bonderman has boasted an outstanding 0.90 ERA over his last three starts. His latest outing came on June 18 in a no-decision against the Angels, surrendering just one run in six innings of work.

"When you look at the physical shape he's in and how hard he's worked to come back, (he) was a good guy to give an opportunity to, and it was worth it," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said of Bonderman.

The 30-year-old right-hander has a 3.49 ERA in eight career starts against the Athletics.

After finding themselves down 5-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning on Saturday, the Mariners scored five unanswered runs to go on to win, 7-5.

Raul Ibanez belted a three-run home run in the seventh to tie the game, his 15th home run of the season. In the eighth inning, Nick Franklin delivered a two-run single, which proved to be the game-winner. Franklin finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, while Ibanez, Endy Chavez, Franklin Gutierrez and Justin Smoak each finished with two hits apiece.

Seattle starter Aaron Harang lasted five innings, allowing three earned runs in the no-decision. Yoervis Medina pitched the final 2 1/3 innings without allowing a run to earn the win.

Despite allowing just two earned runs, Dan Straily failed to make it out of the fourth inning, surrendering six hits and three walks. Ryan Cook was handed the loss after allowing the game-winning hit to Franklin.

Jed Lowrie finished 3-for-3 with three RBI and a walk. Eric Sogard also collected three hits on the night, while an RBI each by Josh Donaldson and Josh Reddick in the seventh inning gave Oakland insurance runs before eventually blowing the lead.

The A's are now tied with Texas for the AL West lead.
