Oswalt takes the hill at Fenway
Jun 26, 2013 - 2:41 PM (Sports Network) - Roy Oswalt makes his encore start for Colorado on Wednesday when the Rockies close out a brief two-game interleague series with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.Oswalt signed with the Rockies on May 3 and his first start in purple and black came this past Thursday at Washington. The 35-year-old veteran fanned 11 batters and did not walk anybody, but he gave up four runs on nine hits and left after five innings.
"I felt pretty well, but I've got to work on command with my offspeed pitches a little more," Oswalt said of his up-and-down performance. "Being a little excited probably made the changeup a little worse than it should be."
Boston will turn to John Lackey, who held the Detroit Tigers to two runs over seven innings his last time out. Lackey has pitched well since the middle of May, posting a 2.42 ERA over his last seven starts.
"I feel pretty good, I threw the ball pretty good," Lackey said after his last outing. "I was able to locate some offspeed stuff and the fastball for the most part. I've been feeling pretty good for a while now. I'm just trying to pound the zone and throw strikes and try to get ground balls and get us as deep in the game as I can."
Boston kicked off its nine-game homestand with an 11-4 victory over the Rockies in Tuesday's series opener. The Red Sox churned out a season-high 20 hits in support of starter Ryan Dempster, who pitched six quality innings. Dustin Pedroia, one of four players to collect three hits, drove in a season- high four runs.
"Outstanding performance," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "Anytime you get 20 hits it's a very good night, but I think early on we found some holes with some base hits that weren't squared up and then combined it with some balls that were squared up."
Rockies starter Juan Nicasio remained winless since May 19, as he allowed seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits and lasted only 2 1/3 innings. Nicasio has not pitched into the seventh inning in any of his 16 starts this season.
Michael Cuddyer went 2-for-5 for the Rockies to extend his hitting streak to 22 games, the longest streak in the majors this season. But as a team, Colorado went just 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position, while the Red Sox were 9-for-20.
The result for the Rockies was their ninth loss in their last 13 games, as they dropped to 2-6 on their current road trip.
This series marks the Rockies' first visit to Fenway Park since the 2007 World Series. These teams last met in 2010 at Coors Field, where Colorado took two of three from Boston.
