Indians, White Sox set to play two in Chicago

Jun 28, 2013 - 2:31 PM (Sports Network) - Right-handed youngster Trevor Bauer makes his fourth start in a Cleveland Indians uniform in the opener of a doubleheader that begins a four-game weekend series with the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

A 22-year-old, Bauer was the third overall pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2011 draft and was 1-2 in four starts with them in 2012 while posting a 6.06 earned run average in 16 1/3 innings.

He was shipped to the Indians in December 2012 as part of a three-way deal that also involved the Cincinnati Reds and included nine players.

He debuted with the Indians on April 6 and dropped a 6-0 decision at Tampa Bay, then rallied to beat Philadelphia on May 1 after allowing one hit in five scoreless innings.

His second loss came May 13 against the New York Yankees after he gave up two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings of a 7-0 defeat.

Bauer has never faced the White Sox.

For the Indians, lefty Hector Santiago starts the first game for the ninth time in his 20th appearance of the season.

The 25-year-old has won two of his last three starts while combining to allow six runs on 12 hits in 19 2/3 innings.

He's 1-2 in five home appearances this season with a 3.15 ERA.

In seven career meetings with the White Sox, Santiago is 2-0 with a 2.76 ERA in 16 1/3 innings.

In the second game, Cleveland starts righty Carlos Carrasco and he aims for his first win in his fifth start of the season.

The Venezuelan has dropped three decisions in his four outings, all of which the Indians have lost.

He's 0-3 in four career starts against the White Sox.

For Chicago, lefty Jose Quintana can maintain an unbeaten career mark against the Indians as he takes the hill in the nightcap.

The 24-year-old is 2-0 in five outings against Cleveland while allowing four runs on 10 hits in 24 1/3 innings.

His last decision in 2013 was a 7-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs on May 27, in which he gave up four runs on four hits in six innings.

On Thursday in Baltimore, the Orioles used a five-run fifth inning to surge past the Indians, 7-3, in the finale of a four-game set at Camden Yards.

Corey Kluber (6-5), who snapped a three-game winning streak, was dinged for seven runs -- six earned -- on 11 hits, tying a season-high, in just 4 2/3 innings.

Mike Aviles and Lonnie Chisenhall each connected for solo shots for the Indians.

On Wednesday in Chicago, Shaun Marcum threw eight shutout innings and earned his first win of the 2013 season, as the New York Mets blanked the White Sox, 3-0, in the second and final contest of a two-game set.

Chicago starter John Danks (1-5) gave up all three runs -- one earned -- on seven hits while striking out seven over 7 1/3 innings.

"I wish we knew what we could do differently," said Danks. "Each night, it's something different. We're good enough to compete but we just haven't done enough to compete as a group. We're way too talented to be where we are right now."

The Indians won three of the first five games between the teams in 2013, while the White Sox took 11 of 18 games in 2012.
