Dodgers survive Phils on Ellis' walk-off hit
Jun 30, 2013 - 5:51 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - A.J. Ellis singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers over the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-3, Saturday in the third tilt of a four-game set at Dodger Stadium. After the Phillies tied the game in the top of the ninth, Hanley Ramirez led off the bottom half with a single to center field off Justin De Fratus.
De Fratus (2-3) responded with a strikeout of Matt Kemp, but walked Andre Ethier before Ellis smacked a single through the right side of the infield, allowing Ramirez to slide in just ahead of right fielder Delmon Young's throw to the plate to send the Dodgers to victory.
"It was a fastball. Maybe I went to the well too many times," De Fratus said of the final pitch to Ellis. "He's a big league hitter and he was ready for it."
Kenley Jansen (2-3) earned the victory, despite giving up the game-tying run in the top of the ninth.
Ramirez finished with three hits, including a three-run homer, and scored twice for the Dodgers, who bounced back from Friday's 16-1 rout to earn their seventh win in their last eight games.
"I was in protect mode and I tried to find a place that no one was at," Ellis said of his game-winning hit. "It's huge to come through with a small piece of our win tonight."
Chase Utley smacked a pair of solo shots for Philadelphia, which had won three of its last four games entering the contest.
The Phillies trailed 3-2 heading into the ninth, but Michael Young smacked a leadoff single down the right-field line and advanced to second when right fielder Yasiel Puig misplayed the ball in the corner.
Young found third on Utley's groundout before Jimmy Rollins lofted a fly ball into shallow center field.
Rollins' fly out wasn't deep enough to score Young initially, but Kemp's throw home short-hopped Ellis behind the plate and bounced far enough up the first-base line to allow Young to race home for the game-tying run.
Domonic Brown then launched a triple off the right-field wall, but Jansen fanned Delmon Young to leave the go-ahead run stranded at third.
Both starters pitched effectively despite not factoring in the decision, as Philadelphia left-hander Cliff Lee struck out 10 over seven strong frames, while LA southpaw Hyun-Jin Ryu surrendered just two runs over seven innings.
Utley homered off Ryu with one out in the first to put the Phillies in front, but Ramirez reached Lee in the bottom half to give the Dodgers control.
Puig's one-out single and an Adrian Gonzalez walk preceded Ramirez's blast to straightaway center field that provided LA with a 3-1 lead.
Utley got to Ryu again in the third when he scorched a fastball over the short wall in right, but the Dodgers starter kept the visitors off the board from there.
With Ryu done after seven strong innings, the Phillies loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but consecutive groundouts left the Phillies trailing by one run heading into the final frame.
Game Notes
It was Utley's 20th multi-homer game and first since July 23, 2011 against the Padres ... The Dodgers announced Saturday that pitcher Josh Beckett will undergo season-ending surgery on his neck in July ... Philadelphia finished 0- for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base.
