Mets fireballer Harvey takes on D'backs

Jul 3, 2013 - 2:48 PM (Sports Network) - It didn't take long for Matt Harvey to make a name for himself in his big-league debut last July.

The Arizona Diamondbacks got the first look at a budding star and will try to slow down the New York hurler on Wednesday in the third contest of a four-game series against the Mets.

The seventh overall pick of the 2010 draft by the Mets, Harvey began his MLB career last season with 10 starts. The first came on July 26 in Arizona, where he struck out 11 over 5 1/3 scoreless innings of three-hit ball to claim a 3-1 win.

Harvey concluded the campaign 3-5 with a 2.73 earned run average and brought a lot of hype with him into this season. He has lived up to the expectations so far, constantly flashing no-hit stuff while going 7-1 with a 2.00 ERA and an NL-leading 132 strikeouts in 17 starts.

The 24-year-old righty won two straight starts before getting a no-decision versus Washington on Friday despite another great outing. Harvey yielded just a run on three hits over seven innings, but the bullpen could not hold a three-run lead in an eventual 6-4 loss.

"It's baseball and it happens," said Harvey. "Those guys go out every single day and pitch their butt off. Today just happened to be one of those days."

Harvey fanned 11 versus the Nationals, giving him seven career double-digit strikeout games over his first 27 starts.

A lack of run support cost Randall Delgado a good shot at a victory in his last start and he'll try again Wednesday for his first win in a Diamondbacks uniform.

Acquired this past offseason in the trade that sent Justin Upton to Atlanta, Delgado is 0-2 with a 4.05 ERA and is coming off a loss to his former Braves club. He took a 3-0 defeat after allowing a pair of runs on eight hits and three walks over six innings.

It marked the first time this season that Arizona was shut out.

"It happens," Delgado said of the lack of run support. "Everyone has been playing well and making plays at the right time. We just lost today."

The 23-year-old righty has faced the Mets once before and grabbed a win even though he allowed three runs, seven hits and three walks over 5 1/3 innings.

Delgado will try to prevent the Diamondbacks from extending their season-high losing streak to six straight games on Wednesday. Arizona was handed a 9-1 defeat last night as New York broke the contest open with a seven-run seventh frame.

Josh Satin snapped a 1-1 tie with an RBI double and Andrew Brown drew a walk off Arizona starter Patrick Corbin before a one-hour, 40-minute rain delay. Brad Ziegler then took over on the mound with the bases loaded and New York came through with four run-scoring hits in the frame.

That led to Corbin taking his first loss of the season as he was charged with five runs over six-plus innings of work. He was aiming to become the first Diamondbacks pitcher ever to begin a season 10-0, but instead Arizona fell to 15-2 when he starts this season.

Arizona is 1-7 on a 10-game road trip, just one game over .500 and 1 1/2 games up on Colorado for first place in a tight NL West. Last-place San Francisco is only three games off the pace.

"We're not really clicking on anything right now," Corbin said. "Just hopefully we can start putting things together, start getting some wins. We're just not playing good baseball right now, and it's a long season. We've just got to hope we turn it around soon."

With Corbin taking the loss, Arizona's starting rotation has not gotten a victory in a franchise record-tying 24 straight games. The unit is 0-10 over that span since a Wade Miley victory on June 5, equaling a streak set from April 17-May 14, 1998.

New York, meanwhile, has won five of its past seven games, including a 13- inning victory in Monday's opener.

"We're all tired," said Mets manager Terry Collins. "I just think they know we can compete with anybody out there if they execute their game."

Anthony Recker homered and Omar Quintanilla drove in three runs to back Jeremy Hefner, who notched his third win of the season and has a 1.51 ERA over his last six starts.

The Mets won four of seven versus the Diamondbacks last season.
