Diamondbacks snap skid, beat Mets' Harvey
Jul 4, 2013 - 6:04 AM Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - In desperate need of a win, the Arizona Diamondbacks were able to break through against one of the hottest pitchers in baseball.Cody Ross cracked a three-run homer and the D'backs roughed up Matt Harvey to take a 5-3 victory from the New York Mets and end a season-worst five-game losing streak.
Arizona had dropped the first two of this four-game set and eight of nine overall coming into Wednesday's affair, but were able to pound out five runs against Harvey (7-2) over the sixth and seventh frames to mount a sustainable lead on a rainy night at Citi Field.
Eric Chavez and Miguel Montero each had two hits and an RBI, while Randall Delgado (1-2) picked up his first win in an Arizona uniform with nine strikeouts over seven innings of two-run ball.
By picking up the victory, Delgado also ended a franchise-record tying 24 straight games in which a D'backs starter failed to pick up a win. Their starters went 0-11 over the stretch.
It was the most runs Harvey has allowed in a start all season, with the right- handed hurler serving up nine hits and yielding three walks over six-plus frames. He did strike out nine batters.
David Wright, Josh Satin and Daniel Murphy each homered to account for New York's offense.
The start of the contest was delayed by a 1 hour, 51-minute rain delay, but Wright staked the Mets to a 1-0 lead in the fourth, reaching down in the zone to pull a Delgado offering into the left field seats. Two batters later, Satin followed suit with the first home run of his career, also to left field.
Harvey scattered four hits while keeping Arizona off the board through the first five frames, but that all went to the wayside when Ross smacked a three- run homer to left in the sixth to provide the D'backs with a 3-2 advantage.
New York's ace then exited in the seventh without recording an out after facing three batters, with Chavez's RBI double past the leaping reach of left fielder Eric Young Jr. finishing his outing.
Scott Rice then entered out of the bullpen, but Montero greeted him with sac fly to push Arizona's lead to 5-2. Rice then issued a pair of walks to load the bases with one out, but David Aardsma relieved him and retired Ross and Cliff Pennington to escape further damage.
Murphy kept the Mets within striking distance with a blast into right field in the eighth to make it 5-3, but failed to tack on more after Wright ripped a ground-rule double.
Heath Bell was able to work around a two-out single from John Buck in the ninth to notch his 15th save.
