Cardinals send Kelly to hill versus Marlins
Jul 6, 2013 - 3:39 PM (Sports Network) - After spending most of the season in the bullpen, Joe Kelly gets another shot in the rotation Saturday for the St. Louis Cardinals when they resume a three-game series against the Miami Marlins at Busch Stadium.Kelly will make his second start of 2013 in his 23rd appearance. His lone start came June 5 against Arizona when he allowed four hits and a pair of runs -- one earned -- over 5 2/3 innings in a loss.
The Cardinals have lost in each of the last 10 games Kelly has pitched in, dating back to a May 14 win against the Mets. The righty is 0-0 with a 1.32 ERA in four games (2 starts) against the Marlins.
Nathan Eovaldi gets the ball today for the Marlins in his fourth start of the season. The 23-year-old right-hander was on the 60-day disabled list due to inflammation in his pitching shoulder before making his season debut June 18 at Arizona. His lone win came five days later at San Francisco.
Eovaldi has pitched six innings in each start, and that includes shutout ball Sunday against the Padres. This will be his second career start against the Cardinals.
Jake Westbrook spun seven stellar innings of one-run ball and Allen Craig knocked in a pair of runs as the Cardinals won 4-1 last night. Westbrook (5-3) allowed just three hits and didn't walk a batter to notch his third victory in his last four starts.
"He started finding the bottom of the zone and found that groove," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said of Westbrook. "When he finds it, it's fun...probably could have kept watching him do it for a couple more innings. He was really on a nice roll."
Trevor Rosenthal struck out the side in the eighth before Edward Mujica fired a perfect ninth to secure his 22nd save of the season.
Matt Holliday registered two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored, while Matt Adams also plated a run for the Cardinals, who had dropped five of their last seven games coming into the contest.
Jacob Turner (2-1) was charged with the loss after giving up all four runs on seven hits over six innings.
"We got down early, but give Jacob a lot of credit," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of his starter. "He battled and made a lot of pitches after that and kept us in the game."
Miami won two of three versus St. Louis down south in mid-June.
