Reds pay a visit to Brewers
Jul 8, 2013 - 2:46 PM (Sports Network) - The Cincinnati Reds look to keep pace in the National League Central standings on Monday when they open a three-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.Cincinnati is 3 1/2 games off the pace in the division pecking order after dropping two of three at home to the Seattle Mariners over the weekend. Starter Bronson Arroyo gave up a pair of home runs in Sunday's series finale and that was all the Mariners would need as they went on to win, 3-1.
Cincinnati's offense managed only six hits for the game.
Beginning Monday, the Reds will be on the road for 17 of their next 20 games.
"It's a challenge," manager Dusty Baker said. "Everybody has that somewhere on their schedule where they have a month where they're gone a lot. Some teams I've talked to have had it already.
"I told my boys we just have to be the best road team that month. We don't have a choice."
Meanwhile, Milwaukee has dropped nine of 12 and is coming off a series loss at home to the New York Mets. The Brewers were outhit, 11-3, as they lost Sunday's rubber match, 2-1. Tom Gorzelanny tossed six solid innings in a spot start for Milwaukee, but a couple of throwing errors by third baseman Juan Francisco helped pave the way for New York's runs.
Kyle Lohse gets the start for Milwaukee on Monday as he eyes up his seventh straight quality start. The right-hander, who has not lost since May 30, lasted eight innings and gave up only one run on four hits against Washington on Wednesday. He also struck out a season-high seven batters.
For Cincinnati, Homer Bailey will try to follow up his second career no- hitter. The right-hander fanned nine batters against San Francisco on Tuesday, and his leadoff walk in the seventh inning was the only blemish standing in between Bailey and a perfect game.
"It's only happened once. I guess there's not really too many things in the history of the game that you can say only happened once," Bailey said. "There's no way I can go into my next one and keep that on my mind. I'd imagine probably the first guy will get a hit and I'll be done with the whole thing.
"At the end of the day, we're trying to win games. We're trying to get on top of the division."
Cincinnati has won five of six head-to-head meetings with Milwaukee this season.
