Padres hope to end downward spiral versus Rockies

Jul 9, 2013 - 2:41 PM (Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres are inching closer to team history. Unfortunately, it's not exactly something they'd like to be remembered for.

The Padres try to avoid an 11th straight loss on Tuesday when they continue their three-game series with the Colorado Rockies at Petco Park.

San Diego's woes continued in Monday's opener, as Tyler Chatwood pitched into the seventh inning and Wilin Rosario stroked a two-run double to send Colorado to a 4-2 win.

Chatwood (5-2) allowed five hits and a pair of runs over 6 2/3 innings. Rafael Betancourt notched his 12th save of the year and first since May 28.

Everth Cabrera and Kyle Blanks drove in a run for the Padres, whose current skid is their longest since a 10-game slide Aug. 26 - Sept. 5, 2010.

The club record losing streak is 13, set from May 8-21, 1994.

Edinson Volquez (6-7) was charged with eight hits, four walks and four runs over 5 1/3 innings in the opener of this three-game series.

"He was a little erratic at times. He tried to reel it back in," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Overall his stuff was good. He was a little erratic with the heater from the get-go and they capitalized on a couple of breaks."

Hoping to get the Padres back into the win column on Tuesday will be lefty Eric Stults, who lost his last two starts. Stults fell to 6-7 on the season Thursday in Boston, as the Red Sox reached him for four runs and nine hits in just 4 1/3 innings to raise his ERA to 3.70.

Stults, though, is 2-0 in nine games (5 starts) versus the Rockies with a 4.02 ERA. He may also benefit from a return home, as he's 3-0 with a 1.41 ERA in his last five home starts.

Colorado, meanwhile, will counter with righty Jhoulys Chacin, who has won his last four starts. Chacin's latest triumph came against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, as he surrendered four runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings to improve to 8-3 to go along with a 3.74 ERA.

Chacin has faced the Padres 10 times (7 starts) and is 4-1 with a 3.38 ERA against them.

Colorado has dominated the Padres this season, winning nine of the 11 matchups, including a three-game sweep in San Diego back in April.
