Padres hope to start win streak in finale with Rockies

Jul 10, 2013 - 2:53 PM (Sports Network) - The losing streak is over and now the San Diego Padres can focus on putting together a winning streak when they play the rubber match of a three-game series Wednesday versus the Colorado Rockies.

The Padres were mired in a 10-game losing streak until Eric Stults put a stop to it with his second complete game of the season in Tuesday's 2-1 win. Stults gave up one run and four hits over his nine-inning outing with five strikeouts and three walks.

"He was pitching great and had a two-hit shutout going into the ninth," Padres manager Bud Black said. "All his stuff was working there and he just pitched a great game. The ball was coming out of his hand really good."

It was San Diego's first win since June 28 at Miami.

Alexi Amarista drove in both runs while Everth Cabrera had two hits and scored a run in the win for the Padres. This club won nine of 11 games in mid-June and had been riding the longest slide since a 10-game drought Aug. 26-Sept. 5, 2010. The club record losing streak is 13, set from May 8-21, 1994.

San Diego is in line for its first series win since a three-game sweep of Arizona from June 14-16 and hopes Andrew Cashner can keep the good vibes going when he takes the mound Wednesday. Cashner is winless (0-1) in his last four starts and only pitched two innings in Friday's 8-5 loss at Washington, as he gave up six runs and five hits.

Cashner is 5-4 in 19 games (14 starts) and has a 3.82 earned run average. He has pitched well at Petco Park this season, posting a 4-1 record and 2.38 ERA in eight appearances, six of which have been starts. The right-handed Cashner has no record and a 5.00 ERA in two games (1 start) against the Rockies this season and owns an 0-1 mark in seven career meetings -- two starts -- lifetime in this series.

Cashner has experienced trouble keeping Colorado off the board and has a 9.77 ERA through 15 2/3 innings pitched.

The Rockies weren't able to keep San Diego's losing streak going and Jhoulys Chacin was saddled with the unfortunate loss. Chacin allowed one run in six innings to drop to 8-4 on the season and Wilton Lopez permitted the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, when Amarista singled home Nick Hundley with what turned out to be the game-winning hit.

"We didn't have a very good approach tonight as a team," Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer said following the club's seventh loss in nine tries. "That's the best answer I can give you. We swung at too many pitches."

Colorado is 1-4 on a 10-game road trip and will visit Los Angeles for four games. The club hopes to get All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki back from a broken rib and he has played two injury rehab games at Triple-A Colorado Springs. Dexter Fowler (hand) could also be activated off the DL soon.

Jorge De La Rosa will make his 19th start for Colorado Wednesday and he lost at Arizona last Friday, when he was touched for three runs in 5 1/3 innings of a 5-0 setback. The lefty is 8-5 with a 3.19 earned run average in 18 starts and has faced the Padres twice this season, going 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA.

Through 17 career games (13 starts) against San Diego, De La Rosa has a 5-2 record with a 5.21 ERA.

The Rockies are 9-3 against the Padres this season.
