Padres crush Giants

Jul 15, 2013 - 4:40 AM San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Nick Hundley had three hits with two RBI and was one of four Padres to homer as San Diego avoided a four-game sweep by crushing the San Francisco Giants in a 10-1 victory on Sunday at Petco Park.

The Padres couldn't muster an ounce of offense while falling victim to Tim Lincecum's no-hitter on Saturday night, but pounded out 12 hits in the series finale while scoring in each of the first five innings.

Carlos Quentin hit a two-run homer and had three RBI, while Will Venable and Chris Denorfia each hit solo shots.

The Padres, however, have won just twice in their 16 last games, with Eric Stults (8-7) picking up the victories in both, and will head into the All-Star break in the basement of the NL West division.

"The way we swung it today I'd rather play tomorrow," said San Diego manager Bud Black. "When you get hot you want to keep going. Regardless, you can't change the schedule."

Stults was solid over six innings of work, allowing just five hits and one run while striking out five.

The Giants were forced to use six relievers after Barry Zito (4-7) lasted only two-plus innings. The lefty was charged with four runs and over his eight road starts this season, has an 0-6 record with an astounding 10.20 ERA.

"My concentration wasn't where it should be," said Zito. "I threw too many pitches down the middle of the plate that hung."

The Giants scored first after Andres Torres led off the game with a triple and scored on Marco Scutaro's base hit, but it all went downhill from there.

Zito gave up three of the home runs, the first on Denorfia's shot into the upper deck in left in the home half of the first. Hundley and Venable then went back-to-back the following frame for a 3-1 Padres edge.

Zito was done after walking Everth Cabrera to start the third, and the Giants bullpen didn't fair much better. Jake Dunning walked a pair, plunked another and surrendered three-run scoring hits while recording just one out.

Quentin, Jesus Guzman and Hundley each knocked in one run apiece, and Venable greeted reliever Javier Lopez with an RBI single to cap the four-run frame.

Guzman added a bloop single over the head of second baseman Scutaro in the fourth with the bases loaded to plate another run and make it 8-1. It was a nine-run spread an inning later after a two-run homer from Quentin.

San Francisco had its three-game winning streak snapped and the defending World Series champs will go into the All-Star break sitting in fourth place in the NL West.

Game Notes

The Padres ended a five-game slide against the Giants ... Reliever Colt Hynes made his major league debut for the Padres and pitched a scoreless ninth ... The Giants had only seven hits ... Denorfia scored three times.
