Bedard to miss start; Cabrera takes hill vs. Mariners
Jul 18, 2007 - 8:32 PM Baltimore (42-51) at Seattle (52-39) 10:05 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- Daniel Cabrera will take the place of red-hot Erik Bedard when the Baltimore Orioles visit the Seattle Mariners in the finale of a three-game series on Wednesday.
Cabrera (6-10, 5.16 ERA), has struggled this season. He allowed five runs and eight hits - while striking out seven and walking four - in six innings in a 7-6 win vs. the Chicago White Sox last Saturday.
The righthander has not won since June 22 and has won just twice in his last nine starts.
It has been a different story for Bedard, who has not lost since June 10 and leads the major leagues in strikeouts. He gave up just three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over seven innings in Friday's 2-0 win over the Chicago White Sox.
This followed Bedard's two-hitter where he faced the minimum and struck out a franchise-record 15 batters in a 3-0 victory over the Texas Rangers on July 7. He owns a 16-inning scoreless streak entering this contest.
But the lefthander will not be able continue his hot pitching due to a stiff neck and instead will take the mound Friday at Oakland.
The Orioles look for their fifth victory in their last six contests.
The Mariners will counter with Jarrod Washburn (8-7, 3.85), who had a three-game winning streak snapped in his last start after surrendering five runs - four earned - and seven hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over six innings in a 6-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Friday.
Jose Vidro had three hits in Seattle's 8-3 loss to Baltimore on Tuesday to extend his hitting streak to seven games. The Puerto Rican switch-hitter is batting .400 (12-for-30) with four RBI and five runs scored during the streak.
