Vidro scores on game-winning walk as Mariners edge Orioles

Jul 19, 2007 - 6:36 AM SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Jose Vidro scored on a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning from Chad Bradford to lift the Seattle Mariners to a 6-5 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night.

With the game tied at 5-5 in the eighth, Yuniesky Betancourt hit a leadoff double to the left-field corner off reliever Danys Baez (0-5) and took third on All-Star Ichiro Suzuki's flyout.

After Vidro was intentionally walked by Baltimore's Jamie Walker, Bradford entered and hit Jose Guillen with a pitch to load the bags. Following Raul Ibanez's groundout forced an out at home plate, Adrian Beltre fought off several pitches before drawing a walk from Bradford to plate Vidro.

"I really don't like (Bradford's) delivery," Beltre said. "It's pretty difficult to pick up the ball. I was lucky enough to take some pitches, get deep in the at-bat and take that walk."

"I can't fault our bullpen for this one," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. "We pitched out of some jams there late in the game."

Sean Green (3-1) went 1 1/3 innings for the win and All-Star closer J.J. Putz hurled a scoreless ninth for his 28th save for Seattle, which finished its homestand at 4-3.

"We have the karma and the presence of the people on our team now that if something happens, we're going to battle through it some way," Mariners manager John McLaren said. "We did what we had to do to win."

Mariners starter Jarrod Washburn was coasting along with a comfortable 5-2 cushion in the seventh inning before the Orioles stormed back.

With two runners on, Jon Knott lofted a sacrifice fly to plate Aubrey Huff, and Chris Gomez followed with an RBI single, chasing Washburn, to pull Baltimore within one run.

Mariners reliever George Sherrill entered but walked Brian Roberts and gave up a single to Corey Patterson to load the bases for Nick Markakis, who lofted the game-tying sacrifice fly.

"We're not going to give in," Trembley said. "I don't care who we're playing or where we're playing, this club is not going to give in. The makeup on this team is such that we're going to come after you. I don't think anybody can fault the way these guys play."

Washburn surrendered five runs and eight hits with five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings to remain winless against the Orioles this campaign.

"Washburn did a Washburn job," McLaren said. "He got a little tired. He battled. I might have gone with him a little too long. But he's a pro and he never backs down."

Orioles starter Daniel Cabrera lasted five innings, allowing five runs and eight hits. The Dominican righthander replaced scheduled starter Erik Bedard, who came down with a stiff neck.

Seattle took the lead in the second, when Betancourt and Suzuki stroked consecutive run-scoring singles off Cabrera to grab a 2-1 advantage.

Ben Broussard, who broke an 0-for-15 slump, scored on a wild pitch in the third and hit his fifth homer in the fifth as the Mariners created a 5-1 lead.

Jay Payton hit his fourth homer of the season, giving the Orioles a brief 1-0 edge in the top of the second.
