Gindl's HR in 13th lifts Brewers over Marlins
Jul 21, 2013 - 10:42 PM Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Milwaukee Brewers fans were treated to a third straight shutout against the Miami Marlins on Sunday, but they needed to sit through 13 innings.Caleb Gindl hit the game-winning home run in the bottom of the 13th as the Brewers swept a three-game series against the Marlins with a 1-0 victory.
With Ryan Webb (1-4) pitching for the Marlins, Gindl led off by hammering a 1-0 pitch to left to record the first home run of his career.
"I was looking for a ball to drive in the left-center gap," said Gindl. "I was looking for a double. I wasn't expecting to hit a walkoff."
John Axford (4-3) pitched perfectly through the 12th and 13th innings to pick up the win.
Milwaukee starter Wily Peralta threw eight shutout innings, scattering two hits and two walks while striking out seven. Despite earning a no-decision, it's been a great July for Peralta, who has allowed just one run over his last four starts, including a three-hit shutout against Cincinnati on July 9.
"We didn't really have a lot of nice at-bats so it was nice to see," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke. "Wily is throwing strikes and is down in the zone. His slider has been really great.
Miami starter Henderson Alvarez also had a great outing, pitching seven scoreless innings, but the lack of run support prevented him from picking up his first win of the season. He was also just one of three Miami players to record a hit in the game.
"It's really tough to see every guy in the lineup struggle," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond. "I don't think I've ever seen that before. We put so much pressure on the pitchers because our hitters aren't there right now."
The Marlins are on a four-game losing streak.
A.J. Ramos was perfect through the 10th and 11th innings for Miami while Milwaukee's Mike Gonzalez and Jim Henderson combined for just one hit in that same span.
In the bottom of the 12th, Jean Segura hit a leadoff single off Webb and stole second base. However, Juan Francisco struck out, Rickie Weeks grounded out to third and Martin Maldonado fanned to strand Segura at second.
Peralta allowed two hits in the third -- back-to-back two-out singles -- but was lights out throughout the rest of his outing.
Norichika Aoki gave the Brewers a chance to score in the home half when he laid down a two-out bunt single and reached third on an infield single by Logan Schafer. However, Segura grounded out towards Alvarez to end the frame.
Francisco Rodriguez pitched for the Brewers in the top of the ninth. He gave up a leadoff single to Adeiny Hechavarria and intentionally walked Logan Morrison with two outs, but got Marcell Ozuna to fly out to center.
Chad Qualls went 1-2-3 with two strikeouts in the bottom of the inning for the Marlins, sending the game into extra innings.
