Rockies try to keep Marlins off the board in Colorado
Jul 22, 2013 - 2:55 PM (Sports Network) - Left Drew Pomeranz makes his fourth try at a first victory of the season on Monday night when the Colorado Rockies host the Miami Marlins in the opener of a four-game series at Coors Field. Now 24 years old, Pomeranz was the fifth overall pick of the 2010 draft by the Cleveland Indians before heading to the National League in the deal that sent former Rockies ace Ubaldo Jimenez to the Indians.
Pomeranz went on to make four starts for the Rockies that season and went 2-1 with a 5.40 earned run average in 18 1/3 innings, but then won just twice in 11 decisions across 22 starts with the Rockies in 2012.
He's spent the bulk of his 2013 in the minors and combined to go 8-2 in 16 starts with Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Colorado Springs with a 4.65 ERA in 91 innings with 101 strikeouts.
In three starts at the big-league level since the end of June, Pomeranz has lost three decisions while allowing 12 runs in 12 1/3 innings, with 11 strikeouts and 14 walks.
For the Marlins, righty Tom Koehler gets the call for the 11th time this season in a starting role.
The 27-year-old New York native started once in eight appearances for the Marlins in his first taste of the big leagues last season, dropping a single decision while posting a 5.40 ERA.
He began this year in a relief role for Miami, but has since compiled 10 starts in 16 appearances, including a 2-1 defeat of San Francisco on June 20 that was his first big-league win.
In that game, he allowed a run on three hits in seven innings.
He's gotten no-decisions in two outings since while combining to give up 10 hits and six runs in nine innings.
The Marlins are 4-12 in games he's pitched.
On Sunday in Milwaukee, Caleb Gindl hit the game-winning home run in the bottom of the 13th as the Brewers swept a three-game series against the Marlins with a 1-0 victory.
Miami starter Henderson Alvarez also had a great outing, pitching seven scoreless innings, but the lack of run support prevented him from picking up his first win of the season. He was also just one of three Miami players to record a hit in the game.
The Marlins are on a four-game losing streak and did not score a single run during the series with the Brewers.
In Denver, Nolan Arenado hit the go-ahead single in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Rockies edged the Chicago Cubs, 4-3, in the rubber match of a three-game series.
With Edwin Jackson (6-11) pitching and the game tied at 2-2, Carlos Gonzalez drew a two-out walk and stole second base. Next was Michael Cuddyer, who was also walked. Gonzalez scored on Arenado's base hit to center and Cuddyer scored on a throwing error by center fielder Junior Lake.
Colorado starter Tyler Chatwood (6-3) gave up two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits and four walks over six innings. Rex Brothers allowed one run in the ninth but notched his fifth save.
The Marlins entered the series with an 83-81 all-time lead against the Rockies, with whom they joined the major leagues in 1993. Miami won the 2012 season series, 4-3.
