Corbin aims to get D'backs into win column vs. Cubs
Jul 23, 2013 - 3:02 PM (Sports Network) - Breakout southpaw Patrick Corbin will try to get the Arizona Diamondbacks back to winning on Tuesday night when they host the Chicago Cubs in game two of a four-game series at Chase Field. The Diamondbacks dropped the opener, 4-2, and fell out of first place in the National League's West Division for the first time in 62 days. Arizona now trails Los Angeles by a half-game after the Dodgers beat Toronto on Monday.
Chicago's Junior Lake went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBI to lead the rebuilding Cubs past the Diamondbacks. Lake's big game came a few hours after Chicago continued to stock its farm system by trading away a proven commodity.
Matt Garza, the Cubs' most consistent starter this season, was dealt to the Texas Rangers for a package that included infielder Mike Olt, pitchers C.J. Edwards and Justin Grimm, as well as a player to be named later.
Chris Rusin (1-0) got called up from Triple-A Iowa to make his second spot start of the season and was effective over five-plus innings, allowing two runs on two hits and a pair of walks.
Dioner Navarro added a solo homer for the Cubs, who dropped two of three to the Colorado Rockies over the weekend.
Tyler Skaggs (2-2) was dealt the loss after yielding three runs on seven hits over six frames. He did not walk a batter and struck out six.
Corbin, who turned 24 years old on July 19, was just 6-8 in 22 appearances - 17 starts - as a rookie last season, but was an instant star upon returning this season - winning his initial nine decisions through his first 11 starts of 2013.
He earned five consecutive no-decisions between June 7-June 27, then fell to 9-1 upon dropping a 9-1 decision to the Mets in New York on July 2.
In two starts since the loss, he's elevated his record to 11-1 while beating Colorado and Milwaukee and allowing 10 hits and two runs in 14 2/3 innings of work.
Corbin defeated the Cubs, 8-4, in Chicago on June 2.
He's opposed by lefty Travis Wood, who faces the Diamondbacks for the fifth time in his 81st big-league start.
The 26-year-old has won just once in those appearances against Arizona while allowing 15 runs on 25 hits in 21 1/3 innings of work.
He was 5-3 this season after an 8-3 defeat of the Chicago White Sox on May 30, but has since won just once in eight starts - a defeat of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on July 9.
In his most recent appearance on July 14, Wood was touched for 10 hits and three runs in a game the Cubs ultimately lost, 10-6, to the St. Louis Cardinals.
He's 2-2 in seven road starts in 2013.
Arizona won two of three versus the Cubs in Chicago from May 31-June 2 and won five of the six meetings at home a season ago.
