Nicasio gets call for Rockies to close out set with Marlins
Jul 25, 2013 - 12:28 PM (Sports Network) - Juan Nicasio aims to win his third straight start when the Colorado Rockies close a four-game series against the Miami Marlins on Thursday afternoon.Nicasio has made two starts since he was recalled on July 12. He pitched seven shutout innings at Dodger Stadium in a 3-0 win and followed that up last Saturday with a 9-3 triumph over the Cubs. In that game, the right-hander limited Chicago to three hits and a run in five frames.
He is 1-4 in his career against the NL East.
Nathan Eovaldi gets the start for Miami. The right-hander is coming off his first loss of the season, a 6-0 defeat versus Milwaukee on Saturday. He yielded season highs in hits (10) and runs (6). His last start, which lasted four innings, was his shortest outing of the season, and snapped a streak of eight consecutive starts of at least six innings.
Eovaldi has made three starts against the Rockies in his career. He is 1-2 with a 4.41 ERA.
Last night, Jorge De La Rosa worked six shutout innings to lead the Rockies to a 2-1 win.
De La Rosa (10-5) scattered five hits and a walk while fanning five to pick up the win. De La Rosa reached the 10-win plateau for the first time since going 16-9 for the Rockies in 2009.
DJ LeMahieu and Nolan Arenado drove in one run apiece for the Rockies, who had dropped three of their last five games.
"We needed the win. I don't know if I'd go as far as saying a must-win," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "We're still in July here."
Rex Brothers worked around a two-out walk in the ninth to notch his sixth save of the season.
Donovan Solano went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Marlins, who had won two straight entering the contest.
"We had plenty of opportunities to score. We had the bases loaded nobody out and couldn't get a run across," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "We had lots of chances."
Jacob Turner (3-3) was the hard-luck loser, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings.
The Marlins are 28-46 all-time at Coors Field and have not had a winning season in Denver since 2009 (2-1).
