Brewers-Rockies opener to feature clash of streaking hurlers

Jul 26, 2013 - 3:02 PM (Sports Network) - Milwaukee righty Wily Peralta is unbeaten in his last four starts and has given up only one run in that span. Colorado's Tyler Chatwood has yielded more than two runs only twice in his 13 starts this season.

Those two hurlers will battle Friday when the Brewers and Rockies start a three-game series at Coors Field.

Peralta didn't get a decision Sunday against Miami in Milwaukee's 1-0 win in 13 innings. He allowed two hits in eight shutout innings. Peralta is 2-0 over his last four appearances and incredibly 3-1 with a 0.87 ERA over his last six starts. During that time, he's lowered his season ERA from 6.08 to 4.30.

In two career games (1 start) against the Rockies, Peralta is 0-1 with a 7.11 ERA. His first start of 2013 came in a 7-3 loss on to the Rockies on April 3 when he allowed six hits and four runs over 5 1/3 innings.

Chatwood has pitched exceptionally well this season, and his record should be better than it stands. That's because the Rockies haven't given him the necessary run support. He allowed a run over eight innings to the Dodgers on July 13, but came away a 1-0 loser. Chatwood allowed only a run to the Reds on June 3, but lost that game 3-0. He departed that contest in the fifth inning due to right triceps soreness.

Chatwood is coming off a home win over the Cubs on Sunday. His only appearance against the Brewers resulted in a win on Aug. 14, 2012 in Denver when he gave up four hits and two runs -- one earned -- over six frames.

The Rockies suffered a 5-3 loss to the Marlins yesterday afternoon. Donovan Solano capped a four-run ninth inning with a two-run homer for Miami.

Colorado scored three times in its final at-bat. The Rockies only had three hits until the ninth. Michael Cuddyer, Wilin Rosario and Nolan Arenado each drove in a run during the final frame, but Jonathan Herrera hit into a game- ending double play. That gave the Rockies three losses in the four-game set.

Adam Ottavino (0-2) relieved starter Juan Nicasio after the contest went to a 1-hour and 33-minute rain delay at the conclusion of the seventh inning. He allowed the go-ahead run to score in the eighth on a wild pitch.

"Every time you lose it's hard," said Ottavino. "Juan pitched a great game today and we were right there, had a good shot to win it and we weren't able to execute."

Milwaukee suffered a 10-8 home loss to the Padres and was beaten in three of the four contests in that series. The Brewers received only 3 2/3 innings out of Yovani Gallardo (8-9). The righty gave up eight hits and three walks.

"He didn't have his game going for him today," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke about Gallardo. "The key for him is his consistency and he just didn't have it today."

Yuniesky Betancourt went 4-for-5 and drove in two runs.

The Rockies took two of three meetings at Miller Park to open this season. Colorado has won eight of the last 10 versus Milwaukee.
