D'Backs send Skaggs to hill to face Padres

Jul 27, 2013 - 2:34 PM (Sports Network) - Tyler Skaggs tries to match Randall Delgado's series- opening gem on Saturday when the Arizona Diamondbacks continue a three-game series with the San Diego Padres at Chase Field.

Delgado was brilliant on Friday, as he spun a three-hit shutout to lead Arizona in a 10-0 rout.

Delgado (3-3) struck out three and walked just one over his efficient outing, needing exactly 100 pitches to notch his first career shutout. The 23-year-old right-hander added a pair of hits at the plate, becoming the first Arizona pitcher to toss a shutout and notch a multi-hit game since Randy Johnson in 2003.

"He was in total command tonight," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said of Delgado. "He's been really good and he's kind of been building up to this; he's just got some good stuff."

Cliff Pennington and Martin Prado collected three hits and an RBI apiece, while A.J. Pollock, Aaron Hill and Cody Ross each plated a pair of runs and scored once for the Diamondbacks, who have won two straight and three of their last four.

San Diego starter Eric Stults (8-9) had a forgettable outing, surrendering seven runs -- five earned -- on 11 hits over five frames to absorb the loss.

"I didn't give us a chance to win from the start," Stults admitted.

Now, Arizona turns to the 22-year-old Skaggs, who is 2-2 with a 4.11 ERA. The lefty lost to Chicago on Monday, as the Cubs reached him for three runs and seven hits in six innings.

"I left a few up in the zone," Skaggs said. "A few pitches weren't where I wanted them to be, and they got hit out of the yard."

Skaggs has faced the Padres twice and is 0-1 with a 10.13 ERA against them.

San Diego, meanwhile, will counter with righty Andrew Cashner, who beat the Milwaukee Brewers his last time out. Cashner allowed three runs and three hits in that one and improved to 6-5 to go along with a 3.84 ERA.

Cashner beat the D'Backs earlier in the year and is 2-0 with a 3.63 ERA in eight games (4 starts) against them.

Despite Friday's loss, the Padres are 6-4 in this series this season.
