Twins have brooms ready for Astros

Aug 4, 2013 - 1:48 PM (Sports Network) - The Minnesota Twins will go for a rare sweep on Sunday when they battle the Houston Astros in the finale of a three-game set.

On Friday Brian Dozier hit a game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning and forced extra innings. He then connected for another RBI single in the bottom of the 13th to win the game for the Twins.

Dozier was at it again on Saturday as his RBI double in the seventh inning started a three-run rally that allowed the Twins to rally for a 6-4 victory.

Dozier was 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the contest while Ryan Doumit and Oswaldo Arcia also had two hits each. Glen Perkins pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 26th save of the season for the Twins, who have won back- to-back games after a four-game slide.

If Minnesota can earn another win on Sunday, it will be just the second sweep for the team this season. The other came in mid-June when the Twins took three from the White Sox.

Erik Bedard pitched six innings and allowed three runs but lost out on a victory after Lucas Harrell allowed three runs in his two innings of relief. Harrell has now lost 12 games this season.

Brett Wallace was 1-for-3 with a home run for the Astros, while Robbie Grossman went 2-for-4. Houston has lost five of its last six games.

On Friday night Dallas Keuchel pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief in an extra- inning affair with Minnesota but was responsible for the 4-3 loss as he let up an RBI single to Dozier in the bottom of the 13th inning. Keuchel was slated to start Sunday, but Brad Peacock gets the call.

Peacock is 1-3 with an 8.07 ERA in nine games (5 starts) and has never faced the Twins.

Making his 20th start of the season for the Twins on Sunday will be right- hander Mike Pelfrey.

Though Pelfrey has certainly been reliable this season he has not been overly successful for the Twins. In 19 starts Pelfrey is 4-9 with an ERA well over 5.00. Pelfrey's current WHIP (1.54) is currently on pace for his highest mark since 2007.

Pelfrey has lost each of the last three starts in which he has factored in the decision, including on Tuesday against Kansas City. In that contest Pelfrey lasted just four innings, while allowing four runs on eight hits. It was the first time since May 21 Pelfrey has not pitched at least five innings.

On Sunday Pelfrey will be making his sixth career start against the Astros. In the first five starts Pelfrey is 3-2 with a 3.31 ERA.

Houston won two of three meetings with Minnesota the last time these teams met back in 2009.
