Arcia, Twins down Astros
Aug 5, 2013 - 12:46 AM Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Oswaldo Arcia broke a tie game with a solo home run in the seventh inning, and the Minnesota Twins held on for a 3-2 victory to complete a three-game sweep of the lowly Houston Astros.Justin Morneau went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Twins, who used another solid effort from their relievers after Mike Pelfrey failed to make it past the fifth.
Glen Perkins worked a scoreless ninth to anchor a bullpen that pitched to a 0.53 ERA (1 ER/17 innings) in the series.
Brad Peacock (1-4) served up both Twins home runs to take the loss. The 25- year-old call-up from Triple-A Oklahoma City struck out 10 over seven innings and was charged with three runs on four hits and a pair of walks.
The Astros, who went 2-8 on their road trip, did not record an extra-base hit and left 10 on base -- three in the seventh inning when Caleb Thielbar (2-1) got pinch-hitter L.J. Hoes to ground into a fielder's choice.
Arcia led off the bottom half and narrowly cleared the right-field wall for his first home rune since June 22 to break a 2-2 tie.
"He was really excited...and we really needed that," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said.
Jared Burton hurled a perfect eighth, and Perkins worked around a two-out single to earn his 27th save.
In the first inning, Peacock walked Joe Mauer on four pitches and proceeded to groove a meaty fastball to Morneau that was hammered over the wall in right field for a 2-0 Twins lead.
Pelfrey worked around baserunners in each of the first four frames before getting touched for two runs in the fifth. He walked Jason Castro with two outs to put two on, and Brett Wallace and Chris Carter each drove in a run with base hits.
Having thrown 104 pitches, Pelfrey was pulled to begin in the sixth with a line of two runs allowed on seven hits and three walks.
