Orioles send Norris to the hill for opener with Padres
Aug 6, 2013 - 2:50 PM (Sports Network) - Bud Norris makes his second start for the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday when they kick off a two-game series with the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.Just a day after being acquired from the Houston Astros, Norris beat his former team in his first start with the Orioles, holding them to a pair of runs and four hits in six innings. He is 7-9 with a 3.89 ERA on the year.
"He was good," Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters said. "He was able to locate his fastball both in and out and mix in his off-speed, throw his slider behind in the count."
Norris has faced the Padres four times and is 2-1 with a 3.13 ERA.
Baltimore finds itself six games back of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East and 1 1/2 games back of the wild card, as it begins an eight-game road trip on Tuesday that will also include stops in San Francisco and Arizona. The Orioles are 28-26 away from home this season.
San Diego, meanwhile, took two of three from the New York Yankees over the weekend and has won six of its last eight. Still, it is 10 1/2 games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
Now the Padres will be without shortstop and leadoff hitter Everth Cabrera, who was one of 13 players suspended on Monday for his involvement with the now-defunct Biogenesis clinic.
San Diego, which is 5-12 without Cabrera this season, will pin its hopes on righty Edinson Volquez, who is 8-8 with a 5.56 ERA. Volquez did not get a decision on Tuesday against Cincinnati, as he allowed two runs and four hits in 6 1/3 frames. However, he did walk five batters in the 4-2 win.
Volquez is 0-1 in three starts versus Baltimore with a 6.43 ERA.
The Padres have won each of Volquez's past three starts at Petco Park, where he's 5-2 with a 5.63 ERA in 11 outings this season.
San Diego swept a two-game set in Baltimore earlier in the year.
