Orioles wrap up set with Padres

Aug 7, 2013 - 2:55 PM (Sports Network) - Right-hander Miguel Gonzalez tries to put the brakes on a personal two-game losing streak on Wednesday when the Baltimore Orioles complete a brief two-game set with a the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Gonzalez was embarrassed by the woeful Houston Astros his previous time out last Wednesday, as he was hit for nine runs (4 earned) and nine hits in just 3 2/3 innings, dropping him to 8-5 on the year to go along with a 3.88 ERA.

"Everything's been flat," Gonzalez said after his most recent start. " ...You just can't pitch that way."

San Diego, meanwhile, will counter with a struggling hurler of its own in lefty Eric Stults, who has dropped his last three starts. Stults' most recent setback came against Cincinnati last Wednesday when he surrendered four runs (1 earned) and 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings.

He is 8-10 on the year with a 3.55 ERA.

Baltimore's Adam Jones enjoyed a homecoming of sorts in Tuesday's opener, as he went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate to back six innings of one-run ball from Bud Norris in the Orioles' 4-1 win.

Jones, who grew up in San Diego, had a hand in most of Baltimore's offense, clubbing a homer, knocking in two runs and scoring twice, while Chris Davis went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the victory.

"It's cool to hear the cheers and all that stuff, but we're here to play a baseball game," Jones said. "I have all offseason to hang out with (family and friends from the area). I'm just glad we got the win."

Norris (8-9) made his second start with the Orioles after coming over from the Astros and allowed just five hits while walking two. Jim Johnson notched his 39th save with a scoreless ninth.

"I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing, which is trying to throw strikes and let the guys play defense," said Norris.

Edinson Volquez (8-9) struck out six in six frames and was a hard luck loser, yielding two runs on six hits. The Padres had won in his previous three starts.

"Our situational hitting was not good tonight and we need to be better at it, there's no doubt about it," said Padres manager Bud Black.

San Diego swept a two-game set in Baltimore earlier in the year.
