Davis hopes to find success at home as Royals host Marlins
Aug 12, 2013 - 2:37 PM (Sports Network) - Right-hander Wade Davis gets another chance to work on his home-field struggles on Monday night when the Kansas City Royals host the Miami Marlins to begin a three-game interleague series at Kauffman Stadium.Davis, who was acquired with James Shields in an offseason trade with Tampa Bay, is just 1-5 in his initial 10 starts at Kauffman Stadium while posting a 4.55 earned run average in 55 1/3 innings.
He was a 9-2 loser to Baltimore in his most recent home start on July 22 and hasn't won there since a 3-0 decision over Minnesota on April 10 in which he allowed four hits in five scoreless innings.
He'd been 0-1 in two starts in Kansas City while with the Rays.
While with Tampa Bay, he was 15-12 in 63 home games at Tropicana Field, which is less than 90 miles from his hometown of Lake Wales, Fla.
He's opposed by 27-year-old New Yorker Tom Koehler, who makes his first career appearance against the Marlins.
Koehler split his initial 2013 season between starting and relieving and has now begun 14 games while coming in from the bullpen six times.
He threw a scoreless six innings while defeating the New York Mets, 3-0, for his last victory on Aug. 1, but took a 4-2 loss to Pittsburgh in his most recent outing on Aug. 7.
Koehler is 2-3 in 12 road appearances this season, including eight starts.
On Sunday in Atlanta, run-scoring doubles from Evan Gattis and Chris Johnson highlighted a four-run seventh inning as the Braves punished the Marlins bullpen en route to a 9-4 victory, their 15th in 16 games.
The Marlins lost for the seventh time in eight games. Starter Henderson Alvarez was charged with four runs on seven hits over six innings of work.
In Kansas City, Alex Gordon went 3-for-4 with a home run and Shields picked up his first win at home in over three months as the Royals claimed a four-game series victory against the Boston Red Sox with a 4-3 win.
Greg Holland shut down the AL East-leading Red Sox in order in the ninth to the enjoyment of the crowd at Kauffman Stadium, who have seen the Royals capture a scintillating 16 of their last 19 games and seven consecutive series victories.
Shields (7-8), picking up his first home win since April 30, fired seven innings while allowing three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits and three walks.
Gordon finished with a pair of RBI, with David Lough and Jarrod Dyson also each knocking in a run for Kansas City.
The Royals led the all-time series, 5-4, entering this week, after winning two of three in series in both 2008 and 2007. The Marlins won two of three the first time the teams met in 2002.
