Royals stay hot, down Marlins
Aug 13, 2013 - 3:50 AM Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Wade Davis ended a long home skid and Alcides Escobar tripled in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning to boost the streaking Kansas City Royals to a 6-2 victory over the Miami Marlins.Davis (6-9), who made his first start in 10 days following the passing of his stepbrother, allowed six hits and a pair of runs. The righty won for just the second time at Kauffman Stadium this season. His first came April 10 against Minnesota, but after that he was 0-5 in nine home starts.
"I was real impressed with the way he threw the ball," Royals manager Ned Yost said.
Royals second baseman Chris Getz, who was activated off the disabled list before the game, had three hits and scored on the Escobar hit to give the hosts a 3-2 edge. It was part of a three-run frame.
By winning for the 17th time in 20 games, the Royals climbed into second place in the AL Central for the first time since June 17. They are 6 1/2 games behind the Tigers. The Royals, who haven't been to the playoffs since 1985 when they won the World Series, have a huge five-game series at Detroit later this week.
Tom Koehler (3-8) surrendered nine hits and five runs over 5 1/3 frames for the Marlins, who lost for the eighth time in nine games.
Getz singled with one out in the bottom of the sixth, and then Escobar extended his bat and hit a slicing blooper down the right field line. The ball bounced off the side wall and away from Giancarlo Stanton, allowing Getz to come home for a 3-2 edge.
Escobar then raced home when Jarrod Dyson beat out a high chopper in front of the plate. Dan Jennings entered from the bullpen, and after Dyson stole second, he scored on David Lough's bloop base hit to right-center.
Billy Butler cranked a solo homer to left off Ryan Webb in the seventh inning.
Kelvin Herrera and Luke Hochevar pitched the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, for the Royals.
Miami left the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, and the Royals finally got their first hit in the bottom of the frame. Koehler nearly got out of the inning, but Mike Moustakas was able to beat the pitcher to the bag after a great diving stop by first baseman Logan Morrison.
"Things like that happen with two outs. It's unfortunate. In a situation like today it ended up being a real big play," said Koehler, who slipped on the play.
Justin Maxwell then tripled to the alley in right-center, and he scored on Getz's base hit up the middle.
Moustakas left the game due to tightness in his left calf and was pinch hit for by Jamey Carroll, who was acquired in a Sunday trade from Minnesota. Carroll struck out to strand runners at the corners in the home fifth.
Stanton singled with one out in the sixth and Morrison followed with an RBI double to right that Maxwell had a hard time tracking down near the wall. With two outs, Greg Dobbs hit a ball into the right field corner and was able to advanced to third thanks to Maxwell's difficulty playing the ball off the carom to tie the game.
