Davis brings power swing to Arizona
Aug 13, 2013 - 2:43 PM (Sports Network) - Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis aims to continue his All-Star campaign when his club resumes a three-game series Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.Davis homered in Monday's 7-6 loss to the Diamondbacks and leads the majors with 43 home runs on the season. He has gone deep three times in the last five games and five times this month for an Orioles club trying to get back into postseason contention.
The Orioles are two games off a wild card spot and received a home run from Matt Wieters in the recent loss. Brian Roberts had two hits and two RBI, while Darren O'Day served up Adam Eaton's game-winning home run in the ninth.
"I thought I hit a heater, but apparently I hit a slider. I caught it out front and was happy with the result," Eaton said.
O's starter Scott Feldman allowed two runs -- one earned -- in 5 1/3 innings.
The Orioles are 4-2 on an eight-game road trip and 6-4 in the past 10 overall.
Miguel Gonzalez draws the start for Baltimore Tuesday and he is winless (0-2) in his past three outings. Gonzalez did not factor in the outcome of last Wednesday's 10-3 win at San Diego and was reached for three runs in six innings. He is 8-5 in 20 starts with a 3.91 earned run average.
Gonzalez, a right-hander, is only 3-4 in 11 starts on the road and will face the D'backs for the first time.
Arizona ended a two-game slide and won for the fourth time in six tries Monday night thanks to Eaton's heroics.
"We have a lot of tenacity and fight in this team," Eaton said after the D'backs erased a 4-2 deficit with three runs in the seventh. "It wasn't any different tonight."
Aaron Hill and Wil Nieves both homered for Arizona, which made a winner out of relief pitcher Brad Ziegler. Ziegler allowed a run and two hits in the ninth and starter Wade Miley gave up four runs in seven innings. Hill, meanwhile, has produced two hits in each of his last five games.
The D'backs, who are 5 1/2 games off a wild card spot, will hand the ball to Randall Delgado on Tuesday and he is 4-3 with a 3.48 ERA in 11 games (10 starts) this season. Delgado is 3-0 in his previous five trips to the hill and did not figure into the decision of last Wednesday's 9-8 win over Tampa Bay.
Delgado allowed four runs in five innings against the Rays and the right- hander has permitted eight earned runs in his past two starts. Delgado lost his only career start against the Orioles last June 17, when he surrendered two runs in eight innings of a 2-0 loss.
Arizona has won 10 of its last 11 interleague home games and faces Baltimore for the first time since the 2007 campaign. The D'backs won five of those six meetings, taking two of three at home.
