Woeful White Sox try to break the brooms out on AL Central leaders
Aug 14, 2013 - 1:36 PM (Sports Network) - Not much has gone right for the Chicago White Sox this season. However, on Wednesday they have a chance to sweep the top team in the American League Central, as they close out their three-game set with the Detroit Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field. At 46-72 Chicago is 23 games back of Detroit in the division. But, Robin Ventura's club has won the first two games of this series and on Tuesday Alejandro De Aza singled home the winning run in the 11th inning to lift Chicago to a 4-3 victory.
Avisail Garcia went 2-for-4 with a two-run triple and two runs scored for the White Sox, who have won three of four.
"These guys are still going out there and competing every night," said Ventura. "You know, we're going against a team like Detroit that has a big league and our guys are still grinding it out. That's the only thing you can do."
Hector Santiago worked five-plus innings in the start and gave up two runs -- one earned -- on six hits. Addison Reed (5-1) got the win for pitching two scoreless innings.
Omar Infante and Brayan Pena each went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Tigers, who have lost four of five, but still hold a six-game advantage on the Cleveland Indians.
Max Scherzer gave up three runs -- two earned -- on four hits over six innings in the start for Detroit.
"He was out of synch and his delivery wasn't there for whatever reason," said Detroit manager Jim Leyland about Scherzer. "You know they still weren't able to get hits off of him, but he's had better games."
Getting the call for the Tigers on Wednesday will be righty Rick Porcello, who is 8-6 with a 4.32. Porcello did not get a decision on Friday against the New York Yankees, as he allowed three runs and six hits i five innings of his team's 4-3 loss.
Porcello has faced the White Sox 14 times and is 7-5 against them with a 4.22 ERA.
Chicago, meanwhile, will rely on lefty John Danks, who is winless in his last seven starts (0-4). Like Porcello, Danks was left without a decision his last time out, as he gave up three runs and four hits over six innings to Minnesota in the White Sox' 7-5 loss on Friday.
Danks lost to the Tigers two starts ago and is 4-9 lifetime against them with a 5.42 ERA in 18 starts.
Detroit has won seven of 12 meetings in the head-to-head matchup this season. The Tigers swept a three-game set at home in early August, as they allowed only three runs for the series.
