Cabrera, Tigers down White Sox
Aug 15, 2013 - 12:42 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run homer and Omar Infante had two hits and drove in a run as the Detroit Tigers edged the Chicago White Sox, 6-4, to avoid a three-game sweep at U.S. Cellular Field.Rick Porcello (9-6) earned the win after grinding through a six-inning effort in which he gave up three runs on 11 hits.
"There weren't any easy outs for me today," said Porcello. "It was good to be able to battle through it and keep us in the game."
Joaquin Benoit needed 27 pitches to navigate through a rocky ninth inning, but stranded a pair of runners in scoring position to notch his 15th save for the AL Central leaders.
Gordon Beckham went 3-for-4, while Avisail Garcia and Jeff Keppinger added two hits and an RBI each for the White Sox, who went 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 15 men on base.
John Danks (2-10) was pegged with the loss after giving up six runs -- four earned -- on nine hits over 7 1/3 innings. Danks lost his fifth straight decision and hasn't won since July 2 against Baltimore.
"We hate losing, there is nothing fun about losing," Danks said. "We show up to the ballpark expecting to win every game. It's all you can do. It was a good series, we had an opportunity for the sweep and we lost it."
The White Sox scored three runs in the first inning. Alejandro De Aza and Alexei Ramirez singled and Adam Dunn walked to load the bases with one out. Garcia then tapped an infield single to score De Aza. Keppinger followed with a sacrifice fly to center to plate Ramirez and Conor Gillaspie capped the scoring in the inning with a single to plate Dunn.
Detroit tied the game in the third on Cabrera's 38th homer of the year. Bryan Holaday and Austin Jackson opened the frame with back-to-back singles before Cabrera laced a hit over the wall in left.
The Tigers rallied for three more runs in the sixth to take the lead. With runners on the corners, Infante punched a single through the hole on the left side to score Victor Martinez.
After Holaday was hit by a pitch to put two on with two outs later in the inning, Jackson slapped a chopper down the third baseline. Gillaspie fielded the ball and fired a low throw to first base that Keppinger couldn't come up with, allowing Matt Tuiasosopo and Infante to score.
Ramirez's single in the eighth scored De Aza.
Jordan Danks struck out and De Aza grounded out in the bottom of the ninth when the White Sox stranded Gillaspie and Keppinger in scoring position.
