Giants shoot for sweep of Marlins as Bumgarner takes hill
Aug 18, 2013 - 2:54 PM (Sports Network) - Madison Bumgarner has a chance to pitch the visiting San Francisco Giants to a sweep of the Miami Marlins Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series. The Giants' leader in wins (11), earned run average (2.73), strikeouts (154), WHIP (0.99) and innings pitched (158.0), Bumgarner is 0-1 in his last two starts and 1-2 in his previous three decisions. The left-hander did not record a decision in Tuesday's 4-2 loss at Washington and allowed one run in four innings before it began to rain.
Bumgarner is 11-7 with a 2.73 ERA in 24 starts and 7-4 in 13 road assignments. He is 0-2 with a 5.00 ERA in three career starts against the Marlins.
San Francisco hopes Bumgarner finds success at Marlins Park and the club hasn't swept a series since taking all three meetings with Los Angeles from May 3-5. The Giants have won three straight and are in search of their first four-game winning streak since a six-game run from April 29-May 5.
Matt Cain pitched the Giants to a series victory in Saturday's 6-4 triumph, as the right-hander twirled seven innings of two-run ball, struck out five batters and issued a pair of walks. Sergio Romo threw a scoreless ninth for his 30th save.
"I felt good," Cain said. "We were letting the defense work and then they were able to put up four runs in that one inning which was big to get a lead and keep it moving that way and keep the momentum on our side is always beneficial as a starter."
Cain was aided by a four-run fourth inning thanks to a two-run triple by Gregor Blanco. Pablo Sandoval also had two hits and Brandon Belt scored twice for the defending World Series champions, who will return to the bay area for a seven-game homestand versus Boston and Pittsburgh.
In injury news for the Giants, second baseman Marco Scutaro left Saturday's game with lower back tightness and will most likely miss Sunday's finale with the Marlins. He is batting .303 with two homers and 23 RBI this season.
"His back tightened up, so that's why I took him out," Giants manager Bruce Bochy told the club's website. "He'll be off (Sunday). He's had ongoing issues this year with it. He got hit in the back (Friday) night, so it tightened up on him."
Miami has dropped 10 of its last 13 games and is still searching for a win on this 10-game homestand (0-2). In Saturday's defeat, Henderson Alvarez was reached for four runs in seven innings to take the loss and A.J. Ramos permitted a pair of runs in relief.
"Ramos came in and got into a huge jam," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "He's been so good this year, limiting baserunners and limiting walks. Those two runs ended up being pretty big."
Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run homer and Logan Morrison added a two-run double for the Marlins' offense.
The Marlins have lost four straight at home and will also host the Dodgers and Colorado Rockies on the residency.
Tom Koehler gets the start for Miami Sunday and he is 3-8 with a 4.62 ERA in 21 games (15 starts) this season. Koehler has lost two straight and three of four trips to the hill and gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings of a 6-2 loss at Kansas City on Monday.
The right-handed Koehler faced the Giants for the first time in his career on June 20 and beat them with seven innings of one-run ball in a 2-1 win. In eight games (6 starts) at home, Koehler is only 1-4 with a 5.02 ERA.
Miami and San Francisco have split six meetings this season.
