Mets visit Twins in makeup game at Target Field
Aug 19, 2013 - 1:15 PM (Sports Network) - The New York Mets will close out their lengthy road trip Monday with a makeup game against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field. The finale of a three-game series between the Mets and Twins on April 14 was postponed due to inclement weather. The Mets outscored the Twins, 20-7, in the first two matchups and have won four of the last five in this series.
New York just split a four-game set with the San Diego Padres and lost the last two contests at Petco Park, including Sunday's 4-3 setback. Matt Harvey was sharp through six innings and gave up two runs before the bullpen imploded. Gonzalez Germen and Pedro Feliciano each allowed a run with the latter taking the loss for yielding Will Venable's game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth.
"I thought I had him 1-2 when I threw a slider," Feliciano said of Venable's homer. "But he's pretty hot right now, and he went down and got it out."
Marlon Byrd had two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Mets, who are 4-6 so far on the road trip.
The Mets will return to Citi Field for nine games after their visit to Minneapolis and hope Dillon Gee can cap this trek with a win. Gee gets the start Monday and is 8-8 in 24 starts with a 3.79 earned run average. He did not figure into the decision of his team's 5-4 loss at Los Angeles last Wednesday and gave up two runs in six innings.
Gee is 3-1 in his past four decisions and the right-hander has never faced the Twins in his career.
Minnesota will put the finishing touches on its eight-game homestand and lost a four-game series to the Chicago White Sox over the weekend. After taking the series opener on Thursday, the Twins lost the last three portions and suffered a 5-2 loss Sunday.
Samuel Deduno was roughed up for five runs and eight hits in five innings, while Josh Willingham and Oswaldo Arcia had an RBI apiece in defeat.
"I'm feeling fine, but I just didn't locate the fastball," Deduno said. "I left a lot of balls up in the zone. I wasn't aggressive with anything."
The Twins are 2-5 on their homestand and will open a six-game road trip Tuesday against Detroit and Cleveland.
Taking the mound for the Twins Monday will be Kyle Gibson and the rookie is 2-3 with a 6.27 ERA in nine starts. He has allowed at least three runs in four straight starts and will face the Mets for the first time.
The right-handed Gibson has recorded three straight no-decisions and the Twins are 5-4 when he takes the mound.
