Peavy goes for BoSox in San Francisco
Aug 20, 2013 - 2:44 PM (Sports Network) - Jake Peavy will make his fourth start in a Boston Red Sox uniform when the current AL East leaders take on the San Francisco Giants Tuesday in the middle portion of a three-game series at AT&T Park.Peavy is 1-1 with a 5.00 earned run average in three starts with Boston after being acquired from the Chicago White Sox a few weeks ago. The Red Sox have lost each of Peavy's last two outings and he is 0-1 in that time.
The right-hander and 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner is 9-5 overall with a 4.41 ERA and went 8-4 in 13 starts with the White Sox. Peavy, a former San Diego Padre, is quite familiar with the Giants as evidenced by his 12-9 record and 3.51 ERA over 25 career starts.
Boston backed Jon Lester in Monday's 7-0 win, as the left-hander hurled 8 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts and two walks. Brandon Workman got the last two outs of the game to preserve the shutout.
"Jon was exactly what we needed tonight," Boston manager John Farrell said.
Shane Victorino and Daniel Nava each had three hits and an RBI for the Red Sox, who have won two of three games since losing three straight and remained one game ahead of Tampa Bay for the AL East lead.
The Red Sox will also visit Los Angeles on this road trip and highly touted prospect Xander Bogaerts could make his debut Tuesday. Bogaerts was called up by the club on Monday and will play either shortstop or third base.
San Francisco lost for the fifth time in eight tries and has dropped two in a row since winning three straight.
In Monday's blanking by the BoSox, Tim Lincecum fell to 6-13 on the season and was charged with five runs and nine hits in five innings. Andres Torres had three hits and Buster Posey went 2-for-4 for the defending champions, who were coming off an east coast road trip with no break in between.
"I do think we've had a tough year as far as travel goes. It has caught up with them at times. That pitcher out there makes you look flat because you're not doing anything offensively," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
Ryan Vogelsong will try to lift the spirits by the bay when he takes the mound for the Giants Tuesday. Vogelsong lasted 3 2/3 innings in Thursday's 4-3 win at Washington and yielded three runs and six hits. He is 2-4 in 11 starts to go along with a 6.75 ERA and will make his first career start against Boston.
Boston took two of three from the Giants back in 2010 and has won six of the last seven matchups between the clubs.
