Chacin, Rockies make a stop at Marlins Park
Aug 23, 2013 - 3:00 PM (Sports Network) - Venezuelan righty Jhoulys Chacin will attempt to reverse the result of his last meeting with the Miami Marlins on Friday night, when the Colorado Rockies visit them for the opener of a three-game series at Marlins Park. The 25-year-old Chacin was a 4-2 loser to the Marlins in Colorado on July 23, after allowing two earned runs on seven hits in seven full innings of work.
He's split four decisions in five starts since, the most recent being a 7-2 loss at Baltimore on Aug. 18 in which he was touched for nine hits and three runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Chacin is 0-4 in five career meetings with the Marlins and has posted a 6.35 earned run average against them in 17 innings, his third-highest ERA against any opponent.
He's dropped two decisions in three outings in Miami, allowing five runs on nine hits in six innings.
Chacin will be opposed by 27-year-old righty Tom Koehler, who's just 1-3 in five games since defeating the Rockies, 3-1, in Colorado on July 22.
In that game, the New York native went seven strong innings, scattering eight hits and allowing the single run while walking no one and striking out seven.
It was his initial career meeting with the Rockies.
He's allowed 16 runs in 26 1/3 innings in five outings since, the most recent resulting in a no-decision against San Francisco on Aug. 18.
The Marlins are 5-5 in the last 10 games he's pitched.
On Thursday in Philadelphia, Domonic Brown's single to right in the bottom of the ninth inning plated Michael Young as the Phillies won in their final at- bat for the second straight night, 5-4, to take three of four from the Rockies.
The Phillies trailed 4-3 entering the final frame and were one out from a series split after Rafael Betancourt (2-5) retired the first two batters he faced. Jimmy Rollins kept the home team alive with a double down the first base line and stole third, which allowed him to score on Young's dribbler past the pitcher's mound.
Jeff Francis relieved Betancourt but walked Chase Utley and hung a breaking ball to Brown, who connected for his second walk-off hit of the season. Carlos Ruiz picked up three hits in the winning effort while Darin Ruf launched his ninth home run of the season.
Wilin Rosario went deep for Colorado while Troy Tulowitzki and Michael Cuddyer tallied two hits apiece. Chad Bettis yielded a run on six hits and fanned five for Colorado, which lost for the fifth time in six games.
In Miami, Carl Crawford knocked in a pair of runs and Clayton Kershaw worked eight scoreless innings, as Los Angeles took down the Marlins, 6-0, in the finale of a four-game series.
Henderson Alvarez (2-3) was charged in defeat for seven hits and five runs over five-plus frames for the Marlins, who have lost five of their last six outings.
The Marlins entered the series leading the all-time matchup with the Rockies, 86-82, and took three of four games when the teams last met in Colorado from July 22-25.
