Padres, Diamondbacks begin set in Arizona
Aug 26, 2013 - 3:04 PM (Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres, coming off a 15-inning game on Sunday, head to Chase Field to begin a three-game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday.San Diego claimed a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Nick Hundley's walk- off single in the 15th inning, ending a five-hour, 13-minute ballgame. Neither team scored through 12 innings, and after the Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 13th, San Diego answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to extend the game and set up Hundley's heroics.
"Any time you go long like that, it adds a little more pressure to win," Hundley said. "Losing games like this takes a little more out of you, and winning games like this gives you a little bit more momentum."
The Padres boarded a later flight on Sunday as they now get set to kick off a six-game road trip against an Arizona club that is clinging to postseason hopes.
The Diamondbacks trail the Los Angeles Dodgers by 9 1/2 games in the National League Central, and they currently sit seven games back of a wild card spot. Things have not gone so well of late, however, as they have lost four of their last five contests.
On Sunday, they were dealt a 9-5 loss in Philadelphia against Roy Halladay and the Phillies. Halladay was making his first start since May (shoulder) and limited Arizona's lineup to two runs on four hits over six innings. D'backs starter Patrick Corbin was tagged for four runs in the first inning to dig his team an early hole after Saturday's 18-inning victory that stretched into the early morning hours.
Arizona will turn to struggling right-hander Brandon McCarthy to start Monday's series opener. McCarthy has gone 0-5 with an 8.59 ERA over his last five starts and gave up seven runs in just 2 1/3 innings against Cincinnati his last time out.
Another short outing would put added pressure on an already taxed bullpen that pitched a total of 40 innings during the team's 4-6 road trip that concluded on Sunday.
"It was a bad trip," manager Kirk Gibson said after Sunday's loss. "We have a big game (Monday). We have to try to get some rest tonight and play a good game."
For San Diego, Tyson Ross is also looking to rebound from a tough outing. He was charged with four runs in 6 1/3 innings against Pittsburgh on Tuesday. Manager Bud Black is hoping Ross can pitch at least six frames again after he was forced to use six relievers in Sunday's marathon win.
San Diego leads the season series with Arizona, 8-4.
