Bumgarner goes for Giants in rubber match with Rockies
Aug 28, 2013 - 3:28 PM (Sports Network) - Lefty Madison Bumgarner aims to end a four-start drought on Wednesday night when the San Francisco Giants visit Coors Field to wrap up a three-game series with the host Colorado Rockies. The Rockies won Monday's opener, 6-1, before the Giants drew even on Tuesday night when, in his first start in nearly a year, Yusmeiro Petit pitched six solid innings in a 5-3 triumph.
Petit (1-0) gave up two runs on six hits and three walks to record his first win since August 27, 2009, when he was a member of the Diamondbacks. Since then, he's played with Triple-A affiliates for the Mariners and Giants and in the Mexican League.
Hunter Pence launched a massive two-run home run while Pablo Sandoval hit a solo shot for the Giants. Marco Scutaro and Hector Sanchez also drove in a run apiece in the victory.
Charlie Blackmon, Wilin Rosario and DJ LeMahieu each had an RBI for the Rockies, who saw starter Chad Bettis (0-3) surrender four runs on nine hits and a walk over six frames.
The Giants won seven of the first 13 games with the Rockies in 2013, though Colorado took two of three when they last met, from June 28-30, at Coors Field.
Bumgarner, a 16-game winner for last season's World Series champions, was 11-6 after a 4-1 win at Tampa Bay on Aug. 2 in which he allowed a run on seven hits in seven innings.
He's 0-2 in four outings since, however, including a tough luck 3-1 loss at Pittsburgh in his last start, during which he scattered seven hits and gave up three runs in eight innings.
In the last four starts overall, he's allowed 12 runs on 22 hits in 24 innings while the Giants have been outscored 19-9.
Bumgarner is 7-4 in 14 career starts against Colorado.
He'll be opposed by Venezuelan-born righty Jhoulys Chacin, who seeks a 10th straight start in which he's allowed three or fewer runs.
The 25-year-old last surrendered more than three on July 4, when he was nicked for four runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings of a 9-5 defeat of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In nine starts since, he's given up three runs three times, two runs twice and one run four times while the Rockies have gone 5-4 in the nine games.
Chacin surrendered two runs on four hits in seven innings of his most recent outing on Aug. 23 in Miami, where Colorado earned a 3-2 victory and Chacin's ERA dropped a tick from 3.24 to 3.22.
He is 4-5 in 12 career meetings with the Giants.
