Red Sox turn to Doubront to close set with White Sox

Sep 1, 2013 - 12:00 PM (Sports Network) - Felix Doubront takes aim at his third straight win on Sunday when the Boston Red Sox close out a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park.

After beating San Francisco, Doubront earned a win over Baltimore on Tuesday, as he held the Orioles to a pair of runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings. He also struck out nine in that one and improved to 10-6, while lowering his ERA to 3.74.

"It's late in the season. Those bats are getting tired," Doubront said. "I was working my fastball. I was feeling good. Throwing the ball down was the most important for me the last two outings. It really was working today."

Doubront has faced the White Sox three times and is 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA.

Chicago, meanwhile, will counter with Brazilian rookie Andre Rienzo, who is 1-0 with a 4.21 ERA. After picking up his first big league win two starts ago, Rienzo did not get a decision his last time out on Monday against Houston, as he was pounded for seven runs (5 earned) and nine hits in six innings of a 10-8 loss.

"(It was a) terrible game for me," Rienzo said. "I got hit really hard. ... It was completely my fault. I (left) the ball up and the guys hit (it). ... (I will) just go to the next one and try to do better."

On Saturday, Jake Peavy held his former club in check over seven solid innings and Boston backed the effort with 15 hits in a 7-2 victory.

Peavy (11-5), making his first appearance against the White Sox since being shipped from the club to Boston in late July, yielded two runs on five hits and a walk to pick up his third win with the Red Sox.

Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits, two runs scored and was one of six Red Sox with an RBI. David Ortiz, Mike Napoli, Jonny Gomes and Xander Bogaerts each had two hits and drove in a run to help Boston win for the eighth time in 11 tries.

"Our starting rotation has been very consistent, our lineup 1-9 has a grind out approach," said Boston manager John Farrell. "But I think this team has played so well because of its overall depth."

The starting staff has allowed three runs or less in 11 straight games, matching a stretch from April 12-25, 1988. They haven't gone 12 games in a row since 1915.

The White Sox had won 10 of 12 before coming to Fenway Park. John Danks (4-11) was lit up for 11 hits and six runs -- five earned -- over five innings.

"He's good at seeing some weaknesses at people and he tried to exploit them," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said of Peavy.

The White Sox have had the slight edge in the head-to-head series. They took two out of three from Boston on May 20-22 and have gone 21-20 against the Red Sox since 2008.
