Ortiz drives in three as Red Sox sweep White Sox

Sep 2, 2013 - 12:46 AM Boston, MA (Sports Network) - David Ortiz had three RBI, Stephen Drew homered and the Boston Red Sox completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 7-6 win on Sunday.

The Red Sox moved to 5-1 on a nine-game homestand and 7-1 in their last eight overall. They used six pitchers in a game Felix Doubront started and went 3 2/3 innings. Brandon Workman (4-2) threw 1 1/3 innings for the win and Koji Uehara pitched a perfect ninth for his 16th save.

Chicago was swept at Fenway on the heels of a 10-2 stretch. Andre Rienzo (1-1) took the loss, giving up five runs in three innings.

The Red Sox scored two runs off Charlie Leesman in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-4 after the White Sox pulled within a run with a four-run rally in the top of the inning.

Chicago manager Robin Ventura was ejected after the first run scored on a bizarre play that initially appeared to be an out when third baseman Conor Gillaspie dove to catch Dustin Pedroia's low line drive.

Gillaspie lost the ball scrambling to tag third base with his glove, hoping to double off Jacoby Ellsbury. Ellsbury scored when Gillaspie threw wildly to first base trying to get Pedroia and Ventura was tossed by umpire Dana DeMuth.

Ortiz added a single, scoring Pedroia from second for a 7-4 lead.

Pedroia had two hits and a walk in the game. The Red Sox, a season-high 26 games over .500, were out-hit 11-8.

They lost Shane Victorino to a hip bruise in the seventh inning that manager John Farrell said occurred when the right-fielder slid into first base. It is not expected to keep Victorino out of the lineup when the Red Sox continue their homestand against Detroit on Monday.

"We fully expect him to be on the field tomorrow," said Farrell.

Ellsbury was replaced in the field in the ninth, but Farrell said he also expected him to be available Monday.

Rienzo and Leesman gave up four walks apiece.

"You put guys on against these guys, you're just asking for trouble," said Ventura. "They make you pay for it."

The White Sox made it 7-5 on Paul Konerko's single in the fifth inning, but stranded two runners in the seventh. Tyler Flowers cut it to 7-6 with his 10th homer in the eighth.

Earlier, Ellsbury hit a two-run single and Ortiz had a two-run double in the second inning to give the Red Sox a 4-0 lead. Drew's 11th home run of the season, a two-out shot to center field, made it 5-0 in the third.

Chicago's four-run fourth was highlighted by Dayan Viciedo's RBI double and Gillaspie's two-run single, drawing the White Sox within a run. Workman replaced Doubront on the mound with two outs in the inning.
