Streaking Wilson hopes to lead Angels past Brewers

Sep 1, 2013 - 12:08 PM (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim turn to C.J. Wilson on Sunday afternoon for the finale of a three-game series with Milwaukee aiming to sweep the Brewers for the first time in 11 years.

Wilson has not lost in nearly two months, with the left-hander having gone 5-0 with a 3.10 earned run average in nine outings since his last defeat on July 5. However, he has not factored into the decision of his past two outings.

Wilson lasted just five innings at the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday, yielding three runs on eight hits and five walks in his club's 6-5 victory. He is 13-6 with a 3.36 ERA in 17 starts on the year.

Wilson, 32, will face the Brewers for the first time as a starter and has recorded just one out and allowed two runs in a pair of previous relief meetings.

Kyle Lohse looks for a rebound effort Sunday afternoon for the Brewers after getting roughed up in a no-decision on Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

Lohse was charged with five runs and a career-high 13 hits over 5 1/3 innings, though his club recovered to win 7-6 and leave Lohse 9-8 with a 3.39 ERA in 27 starts this season.

The 34-year-old righty will face the Angels for the 12th time in his career and comes into this meeting 4-5 with a 6.79 ERA against them.

The Angels are wrapping a nine-game road trip today and are 7-1 on the trek. A victory today would give them their first sweep of the Brewers since a three-game set in Milwaukee from June 21-23, 2002.

The Brewers had won each of the previous two sets, winning two of three in Anaheim in 2004 and 2010.

Milwaukee was on the verge of evening this series on Saturday, but Hank Conger came through with a two-out, pinch-hit homer in the top of the ninth inning. His two-run blast lifted the Angels to a 6-5 win.

Conger's homer came after Josh Hamilton had ripped a pinch-hit double off Milwaukee closer Jim Henderson to keep the inning alive.

Henderson blew his first save since June 30 and had his franchise-record streak of consecutive appearances with a save end at 12. Saturday also marked the first time this year the Brewers lost when leading after eight innings (50-1).

"I throw a lot of fastballs ... and I left it over the plate," Henderson said.

Dane De La Rosa pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the win behind Jerome Williams, who held Milwaukee to three runs on eight hits over six innings.

"(Williams) really settled in and pitched six strong innings for us," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "That's the way he can pitch. He has a quality in him to get it done like that."

Jonathan Lucroy went 3-for-5 with four RBI while Scooter Gennett had three hits and scored twice for Milwaukee, which has lost three of four.
