Bumgarner eyes first win in six starts versus Padres
Sep 3, 2013 - 2:39 PM (Sports Network) - Madison Bumgarner attempts to win for the first time in six starts on Tuesday night, when the San Francisco Giants resume a three-game set with the San Diego Padres.Bumgarner is 11-9 with a 2.91 earned run average in 27 starts, but 0-3 in five outings since a win over Tampa Bay on Aug. 2. He still has a solid 3.99 ERA over his drought and lost his second straight start on Wednesday in Colorado.
The left-hander was charged with four runs -- three earned -- on five hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings.
Bumgarner, 24, is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in three starts versus the Padres this year and 6-3 against them lifetime with a 3.32 ERA.
San Diego counters with 22-year-old Robbie Erlin, who makes the sixth start of his Major League career.
Erlin rejoined the Padres on Wednesday in place of the released Edinson Volquez and turned in an excellent outing. He held Arizona to a run on six hits and two walks over six innings, winning a 5-1 decision.
"I thought his hand speed, his arm speed was as good as I've seen it. His fastball had some life," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Robbie was able to carry his fastball all night long. He threw 30 pitches in the sixth inning and I thought that was enough. He was throwing the ball great."
It was a big improvement over the lefty's previous big league start on July 7. He allowed nine runs over four innings in a setback in Washington.
Erlin is 2-2 with a 5.97 ERA in seven games (5 starts) this season and will face the Giants for the first time.
San Diego snapped a three-game losing streak with Monday's 4-1 win. Nick Hundley hit a solo homer and Ronny Cedeno logged two hits with an RBI.
Ian Kennedy hurled six innings of one-run ball for the Padres, striking out seven.
"For the most part I felt like I threw my fastball where I needed to and I worked off that," Kennedy said.
Struggling veteran Barry Zito took the mound for San Francisco and lasted only four innings, giving up four runs on four hits with three walks. The Padres handed the left-hander his eighth consecutive losing decision and Zito fell to 0-9 with a 9.23 ERA on the road this year.
"Finding the strike zone ... that's what did him in and did us in," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
Brandon Belt drove in a run and had two hits for San Francisco, which fell to 3-4 on a nine-game road trip.
The Giants have still won five of their last seven meetings with the Padres and lead the season series 8-6.
