Padres target series win over Rockies
Sep 7, 2013 - 1:02 PM (Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres aim for their second straight series win Saturday in the continuation of a three-game set versus the NL West-rival Colorado Rockies from Petco Park. The Padres took two of three from the San Francisco Giants, then opened this series versus the Rockies with Friday's 4-3 victory in dramatic fashion. Chase Headley tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run and Jesus Guzman later delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to end the game.
"I think that game was Chase Headley," Guzman said. "He won the game because he changed the game. If he didn't change the game, I don't get that hit."
Will Venable homered and Huston Street picked up the win in the ninth. Burch Smith started for the Padres and struck out seven over five innings of two-run ball.
Tyson Ross hopes to pitch San Diego to a series win when he takes the mound Saturday night. Ross is 0-2 in his last four appearances and 3-7 with a 2.99 earned run average in 30 games (11 starts). He did not figure into the decision of a 2-1 loss at Los Angeles on Sunday and collected 10 K's over five innings of one-run ball.
Ross, a right-hander, is 0-2 with a 4.26 ERA in four games (2 starts) lifetime against the Rockies.
Colorado's start of a nine-game road trip didn't go as planned and the club will try to regroup Saturday. In Friday night's tough defeat, Rex Brothers allowed the go-ahead runs in the ninth to absorb the loss.
"If you make bad pitches, you get beat in this league," Brothers said.
Todd Helton homered for the Rockies, losers in three of four games. Rockies outfielder Dexter Fowler left the game with a knee issue and could miss Saturday's middle test with the Padres. Fowler has been plagued by injuries this season.
Tyler Chatwood draws the start for the Rockies Saturday and he is 7-4 with a 3.29 ERA in 16 starts. Chatwood is 0-1 in his last two outings after winning three of four trips to the hill, and lasted two innings in Monday's 7-4 win over Cincinnati for a no-decision. He allowed two runs and four hits.
Chatwood has faced the Padres four times (2 starts) in his career and the righty is 1-0 with a lofty 6.57 ERA.
The Rockies are 12-5 against the Padres this season.
