Lincecum toes rubber for Giants versus Rockies
Sep 9, 2013 - 3:00 PM (Sports Network) - Tim Lincecum aims for a fourth straight victory on Monday night when the San Francisco Giants begin a three-game set with the Colorado Rockies.Lincecum is 9-13 with a 4.50 earned run average in 28 starts and is on his longest winning streak of the season despite some struggles last time out.
Returning to San Diego for the first time since his no-hitter on July 13, the righty allowed five runs on seven hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings last Wednesday. However, he got plenty of support in a 13-5 decision.
The 29-year-old Lincecum may need his offense again tonight as he is 0-2 with an 8.00 ERA in three starts versus the Rockies this season.
Lincecum will try to pitch the Giants to consecutive victories for the first time since Aug. 24-25. San Francisco is coming off a split of a four-game set with Arizona, winning Sunday's finale 3-2 in 11 innings.
Angel Pagan drove home the winning run, while Hector Sanchez had three hits and an RBI.
"When you win a game like that it's a sense of relief," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "We got some real good pitching and the guys that came off the bench did some good work today."
The Rockies were not as fortunate on Sunday, falling 5-2 to San Diego, which swept the three-game set.
Michael Cuddyer and Jordan Pacheco drove in one run apiece for the Rockies, losers in five of their last six games.
Rockies starter Chad Bettis worked three scoreless innings, striking out five and scattering two hits.
"What I'm learning up here and what I'm working on are things I can definitely continue during the offseason," said the rookie Bettis, who is having his innings limited down the stretch.
Getting the call tonight for the Rockies will be Jhoulys Chacin, who is 13-8 with a 3.16 ERA in 27 outings this season.
The right-hander was aiming for a third straight victory on Tuesday versus Los Angeles and settled down after some early struggles. However, he still lost a 7-4 decision, giving up four runs on nine hits over seven innings of work.
"He really settled down there after the first inning and pitched seven frames for us," said Colorado manager Walt Weiss about Chacin. "He did a good job for us tonight and really had good stuff with his fastball."
Chacin has logged at least seven innings in eight of his past nine appearances.
The 25-year-old has held the Giants to one unearned run through 15 innings over a pair of victories since getting blasted by the club for eight runs in 5 1/3 frames of a loss on May 16. Chacin is 5-5 lifetime versus San Francisco with a 3.58 ERA.
The Giants and Rockies have split 16 meetings this season, with San Francisco winning five of six at home.
