Adams' late homer lifts Cardinals past Brewers
Sep 12, 2013 - 5:43 AM St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - The St. Louis Cardinals rallied for four runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by Matt Adams' two-run homer, to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 on Wednesday. With the game tied 1-1, Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday singled around a Jon Jay walk to load the bases. Carlos Beltran then lifted a sacrifice fly to deep left field to score Carpenter.
Jay then stole third before scoring on Jonathan Lucroy's throwing error and Adams followed with a line drive homer that bounced off the first row of seats in right field to a 5-1 lead.
Holliday finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Daniel Descalso drove in a run for the Cardinals, who maintained a one-game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates atop the NL Central standings.
Trevor Rosenthal (2-3) earned the win with a scoreless eighth inning. Starter Lance Lynn allowed one unearned run on five hits while fanning 10 over six innings.
"It was much more like what I expect Lance to be tonight. He controlled the game and didn't allow things to get out of hand. He focused, got back on the mound and made good pitches," said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny.
Marco Estrada was the second Brewers pitcher in as many nights to carry a no- hitter into the sixth inning. He allowed just one run on two hits while striking out six over 6 2/3 innings.
Wily Peralta took a no-hitter into the sixth inning on Tuesday.
Brandon Kintzler was pegged with the loss after yielding three runs on three hits over just 2/3 of an inning.
The Brewers got on the board in the second inning. Carlos Gomez singled and Scooter Gennett walked to put runners on first and second with one out. Gomez then swiped third and scored as the throw from catcher Tony Cruz, filling in for the absent Yadier Molina, sailed into left field.
Carpenter ended Estrada's no-hit bid in the sixth inning with a single that deflected off the pitcher's glove.
The Cardinals finally broke through in the seventh inning as Descalso singled home Holliday, who led off the inning with a base hit to center.
"I'm frustrated," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said. "I'm tired of getting leads and just giving them away. We've got to win some of these games where we get leads."
