Halladay, Phils aim for series win over Padres

Sep 12, 2013 - 2:33 PM (Sports Network) - Former ace Roy Halladay makes his 11th start of the season for the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night when they wrap up a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park with the San Diego Padres.

A combined 40-game winner in 2010 and 2011, Halladay has been dogged by injuries and ineffectiveness since then while winning just 14 times in 35 starts across 2012 and 2013.

He earned his third win of the 2013 season with six innings of two-run ball against Arizona on Aug. 25, but has since gotten no-decisions against the Chicago Cubs and Washington in games in which he surrendered 10 hits and six runs in 11 innings.

He was scheduled to start earlier this week against the Padres but had the outing pushed back because of a bout with the flu.

Halladay is 3-2 in five career starts against the Padres with a 2.15 earned run average in 37 2/3 innings.

He's opposed by 26-year-old righty Tyson Ross, who's winless in five outings since earning his third triumph of the season on Aug. 10 in Cincinnati.

In that game, Ross tossed seven innings and scattered four hits while allowing one run in a 3-1 Padres victory.

In the month-plus since, he's pitched at least six innings four times and allowed three runs or less twice while San Diego has lost four of the five games.

He went seven innings against Colorado in his most recent outing on Sept. 7 but got a no-decision in a 2-1 Padres victory.

In two career relief appearances against the Phillies, Ross has allowed a hit and no runs with one strikeout in 2 1/3 innings.

On Wednesday, Freddy Galvis went 3-for-3 and finished a triple shy of the cycle, Cliff Lee tossed eight solid innings and the Phillies beat the Padres, 4-2.

Galvis ended with two RBI and two runs scored for the Phillies, who bounced back from an 8-2 loss in the series opener on Tuesday. Jimmy Rollins added a solo homer.

Lee (13-6) allowed two runs on five hits while striking out nine for Philadelphia, which has won four of five. The left-hander picked up his third straight victory.

Tommy Medica hit his first career homer for the Padres, who had a four-game winning streak snapped. Jedd Gyorko added a solo homer in defeat.

Eric Stults got the start for San Diego and gave up two runs on six hits while striking out five over six innings. Nick Vincent (4-3) took the loss after allowing one run on one hit while walking two in the seventh inning.

The Phillies won two of three games from the Padres when the teams played in Philadelphia in June.
