Weaver takes on Astros aiming for 10th victory
Sep 14, 2013 - 2:35 PM (Sports Network) - Jered Weaver shoots for his 10th win of the season on Saturday when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim continue a three-game series with the Houston Astros.Weaver did not get a decision in Minnesota on Monday, as he allowed three runs and nine hits in six innings of his team's 6-3 loss. Weaver, who is 9-8 with a 3.38 ERA on the year, experienced some tightness in his forearm, but expects to be fine.
"It just started tightening up a little in the third or fourth," said Weaver, who has never faced the Astros. "I got through the sixth inning, and (Mike) Scioscia didn't want to push it any more, which is understandable. It's nothing concerning. Just maybe (with) the hot, humid air and losing a lot of fluids and stuff it started tightening up there a little bit, but it's not a concern."
Houston, meanwhile, will counter with lefty Brett Oberholtzer, who has gone 4-2 with a 1.91 ERA and 31 strikeouts in seven starts since joining the rotation. Oberholtzer followed his first career shutout with a loss in Oakland last Saturday, but he pitched well, as he surrendered just one run in six innings to lower his ERA on the year to 2.65.
"I just continued to feed off the way I have been pitching the last few outings," Oberholtzer said. "I made some key pitches in key situations to get out of jams. That's been the key to my success."
Oberholtzer leads the AL and ranks fifth in the majors in ERA since joining the Astros rotation.
In Friday's opener, Matt Dominguez laced his second-career grand slam to help guide Houston to a 9-7 win. Jonathan Villar and Trevor Crowe each belted three hits in the victory with Jose Altuve going 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and two runs scored.
Houston plated three in the third and six in the fifth to win its fourth straight game.
Dallas Keuchel (6-10) picked up the win despite allowing six runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings, and Josh Fields tossed a perfect ninth for his fifth save.
"I felt really good," Keuchel said. "We got the win and that's all that matters."
Mark Trumbo and Andrew Romine drove in two each in the losing effort as the Angels dropped a game for just the third time in their last nine tilts.
Houston has won 10 of its 17 games with the Angels this season.
