Buehrle hopes to deliver Jays series win vs. O's

Sep 15, 2013 - 1:33 PM (Sports Network) - Mark Buehrle tries to bounce back from an awful showing his last time out when the Toronto Blue Jays play the rubber match of a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at Rogers Centre.

The veteran left-hander had gone 6-0 with a 2.02 ERA in his previous nine starts, but was roughed up by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to the tune of eight runs in four innings and couldn't retire a batter in the fifth, as he fell to 11-8 on the year to go along with a 4.18 ERA.

"You can't be on every time," Buehrle said after the game. "You're going to have your bad day at the office, and today was one of those."

Buehrle has faced the Orioles 19 times (17 starts) and is 7-6 with a 3.28 ERA against them.

Baltimore, meanwhile, will counter with righty Miguel Gonzalez, who is 9-7 with a 4.00 ERA. Gonzalez did not get a decision on Tuesday against the New York Yankees, as he allowed three runs in six innings of his team's 7-5 loss.

Gonzalez is 2-2 lifetime versus the Jays with a 3.79 ERA in six games (5 starts).

Toronto evened this series at a game apiece on Saturday, as Colby Rasmus hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to help lift the Blue Jays to a 4-3 win.

Moises Sierra plated a pair with a first-inning double for Toronto, which snapped a four-game slide. Jeremy Jeffress (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Esmil Rogers, tossing a scoreless seventh. Rogers gave up three runs on five hits and struck out seven over the first six frames.

Manny Machado homered and scored two runs for the Orioles, who have lost five of seven and are 3 1/2 games back of the wild card.

Baltimore finished 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and wasted a complete-game effort by Chris Tillman (16-6). Tillman allowed six hits and walked only two, but both came around to score.

"Tilly pitched well again. He's closing in on 200 innings," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter. "He was solid, just got a couple changeups up. It's been a big pitch for him all year. He just elevated a couple and they made him pay for it."

Toronto has won eight of 15 matchups with the Orioles this season.
