Final/10
Phillies close series with Marlins
Sep 18, 2013 - 2:45 PM (Sports Network) - Journeyman right-hander Zach Miner makes his first start in a Philadelphia uniform when the Phillies host the Miami Marlins in the finale of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies are the fourth organization with which Miner has pitched since he was a fourth-round pick of Atlanta in the 2000 draft.
He was traded by the Braves to Detroit in 2005, signed as a free agent by Kansas City in 2010 and again in 2011, purchased by the Tigers in 2012 and again picked up as a free agent by the Phillies later that same year.
He's made 170 appearances in the big leagues and started 35 games since reaching the majors with Detroit in 2006. Meanwhile, he's pitched in 228 minor-league games since his draft year, making 162 starts and compiling a 45-60 record.
Miner gets the start as a fill-in for Kyle Kendrick, who's nursing a sore shoulder. In 13 relief outings with the Phillies, Miner has posted a 3.72 earned run average while allowing 20 hits and eight runs in 19 1/3 innings.
He's faced by Marlins young righty Nathan Eovaldi, who was 10 years old when Miner was drafted in 2000.
Eovaldi reached the big leagues with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2011 and split 2012 between the Dodgers and Marlins while posting a 4-13 record in 22 starts.
He's made 15 starts this season, won three times and compiled a 3.80 ERA in 87 2/3 innings, the last three of which came against Washington in an ugly 9-2 loss on Sept. 7, in which he allowed five runs and nine hits.
Eovaldi is 0-for-4 in his career against the Phillies, losing all four matchups while allowing 14 runs on 28 hits in 20 innings.
On Tuesday, Chase Utley went 3-for-4 with his second three-run home run in as many nights as the Phillies took a 6-4 win over the Marlins.
Roy Halladay (4-4) pitched well enough to pick up the win as he threw six innings and allowed one run and just four hits. The righty struck out two while walking to pick up his first decision since a win on August 25.
Carlos Ruiz drove in the other two runs for Philadelphia, which has won three of the last four. Cesar Hernandez, Jimmy Rollins and Utley carried the load by notching eight hits combined and scoring all six runs.
The Marlins offense was spread among Ed Lucas, Justin Ruggiano, Giancarlo Stanton and Adeiny Hechavarria as they each knocked in a run. Christian Yelich went 3-for-4 and scored one run for Miami, which has lost four straight.
Miami rookie starter Brian Flynn (0-2) gave up 11 hits and six runs over six innings while recording four strikeouts and walking one.
The Phillies won nine of the first 13 games with the Marlins this season, a year after winning the 2012 season series, 10-8.
