Rockies rely on Chacin in opener with Arizona

Sep 20, 2013 - 2:51 PM (Sports Network) - Venezuelan right-hander Jhoulys Chacin can add to an already career-best win total on Friday night when the Colorado Rockies host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opener of a three-game weekend series at Coors Field.

Chacin, who won 11 games in 2011 before winning just three times last season, picked up win No. 11 in 2013 with a 14-2 rout of the San Diego Padres back on Aug. 12.

He's just 2-3 in six starts since, picking up additional wins over Miami and San Francisco on Aug. 23 and 28 while combining to surrender just five hits and three runs in 14 strong innings.

In three outings since, he's been nicked for 11 runs and 20 hits in 18 innings while the Rockies have lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco and, in his last start, Arizona.

The Diamondbacks won an 8-2 decision in Phoenix on Sept. 15 when Chacin was raked for six runs on seven hits in four innings - the only time this season he's failed to pitch at least five innings.

Arizona goes with Panamanian-born youngster Randall Delgado, who was the winner over Chacin and the Rockies in that Sept. 15 game.

Just 23 years old, Delgado earned victory No. 5 of 2013 with six innings of five-hit, two-run ball while walking one batter and striking out three.

It was his first victory since Aug. 2, when he's thrown six innings in a 7-6 defeat of Boston at Fenway Park.

In seven interim starts, Delgado was 0-3 with four no-decisions as his ERA for the season steadily climbed from 3.17 after the Boston win to 4.04 after an 8-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sept. 9.

Nonetheless, the Diamondbacks are 7-3 in his last 10 outings.

On Thursday in Arizona, the Dodgers became the first team to clinch a playoff spot, wrapping up the National League West title with a 7-6 win over the Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

Hanley Ramirez clubbed two homers and drove in four runs as part of a 4-for-5 performance for the Dodgers, who became just the fourth club all-time to go from being in last place on July 1st or later to finishing in first place.

In Colorado, Corey Dickerson's second triple of the game drove in the deciding run in the bottom of the 15th inning as the Rockies dealt the St. Louis Cardinals a 7-6 loss.

Dickerson also had a run-scoring triple in the eighth inning and finished 3- for-7, while Charlie Blackmon collected four hits to help the Rockies earn a split of the four-game series and reduce the Cardinals' lead atop the NL Central to one game over Pittsburgh.

Todd Helton aided Colorado's cause with a game-tying solo homer off Cards closer Edward Mujica in the bottom of the ninth, with Troy Tulowitzki socking a two-run shot earlier on. Rob Scahill (1-0) earned his first major league victory after working out of a jam in the top of the 15th.

Both starting pitchers, the Cardinals' Michael Wacha and Colorado's Roy Oswalt, permitted four runs in 4 2/3 innings of work. Wacha was tagged for 12 hits, with Oswalt hurt by issuing four walks.

The Diamondbacks won 10 of their fist 16 games with the Rockies this season heading into the weekend, a year after they won the 2012 season series, 10-8.
