Hoping to avoid sweep, Phils turn to Lee vs. Mets

Sep 22, 2013 - 12:08 PM (Sports Network) - After pitching to an 0-4 mark over a six-start span in July and August, Cliff Lee has hit his stride down the stretch for the Philadelphia Phillies.

The left-hander, who is 4-0 over his last six starts, will be on the mound Sunday afternoon when the Phillies try to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the New York Mets.

Lee is coming off an impressive performance Monday against the Marlins as he struck out 14 while pitching eight innings of two-run ball and knocked in four runs. Lee has pitched eight innings four times during his current unbeaten string, which dates back to an Aug. 16 defeat to the Dodgers.

Lee, who is completing his third season of a five-year contract, is 6-2 with a 2.40 ERA in 11 starts versus the Mets.

The Phillies, who will finish the season with a sub .500 record for the first time since 2002 (80-81), will try to stop a three-game skid. It also marks their final home game. They've compiled a 43-37 mark at Citizens Bank Park.

Carlos Torres starts today for the Mets. The righty fanned four in two scoreless innings in a relief appearance against the Giants on Wednesday. He's lost three consecutive starts. Torres has a 1-1 mark with a 3.18 ERA in six games (1 start) against the Phillies.

David Wright and Daniel Murphy both hit solo home runs as the Mets won 5-4 last night in a rain-shortened seven-inning game. David Wright crossed the plate twice and went 2-for-3 with a walk for the Mets, who have won three of their last four.

Dillon Gee (12-10) surrendered four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts, while Phillies' starter Tyler Cloyd (2-6) was reached for five runs on six hits in five-plus innings.

"For the most part I felt like I executed my pitches well," said Gee. "It was a rough six innings, but I got some good run support from the rest of the guys."

Jimmy Rollins, Cody Asche, and Carlos Ruiz each drove in a run for the Phillies.

The teams have split 18 meetings this season, but the Mets have won six of the past eight contests between the NL East foes.
