Tovar, Mets beat Phillies to complete sweep
Sep 23, 2013 - 1:03 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Wilfredo Tovar plated the most important runs of the game in his major league debut, with his go-ahead single in the seventh helping the New York Mets to a 4-3 victory and a three-game series sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. With runners on second and third and the Mets behind by a run, the rookie shortstop lined a single to left. Juan Lagares scored easily and Anthony Recker came around when Phillies left fielder Domonic Brown mishandled the go- ahead hit.
"I was looking for something inside," Tovar said. "I got it, and I was able to drive in the run."
Lagares added an RBI double in the eighth for insurance before LaTroy Hawkins notched his 12th save with a scoreless ninth. Carlos Torres (4-5) struck out six over six solid innings for New York, scattering seven hits, three walks and two runs to pick up the win.
Brown, Darin Ruf and Kevin Frandsen each knocked in a run for the Phillies, who had removed the interim tag from manager Ryne Sandberg prior to the game and rewarded the skipper with a three-year contract extension.
"It was a good atmosphere for our last (home) game," said Sandberg. "Says a lot for the fans and the fan base."
Cliff Lee (14-7) struck out eight but took the loss, charged with three runs -- two earned -- on eight hits over seven innings of work.
Ruf's sacrifice fly in the eighth brought the Phillies within a run, but they failed to capitalize on their scoring opportunity in the ninth. Frandsen began the frame with his second hit of the game and moved to second after a bunt by Freddy Galvis. However, Hawkins stranded him there, striking out both Cesar Hernandez and Jimmy Rollins to end the game.
Brown scored the first run of the game in the second inning, reaching with a leadoff walk before eventually crossing the plate on Frandsen's two-out double to left center.
The Mets' first two batters of the fourth reached, with Eric Young opening the frame with a single and Wilmer Flores following with a double. Andrew Brown then plated Young with his groundout toward first for a 1-1 tie.
The Phils retook the lead, 2-1, in the sixth. Rollins and Chase Utley opened the frame with a double and single, respectively, before Brown's one-out hit sent the team in front for just a half-inning.
