Wilson goes for 18th victory, sweep of Mariners
Sep 22, 2013 - 12:54 PM (Sports Network) - C.J. Wilson has been one of the silver linings in what has been yet another disappointing season for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The left-hander goes after a 10th straight winning decision on Sunday when the Halos close out a three-game set with the Seattle Mariners at Angel Stadium.Wilson continued his roll on Monday in Oakland, as he held the Athletics to a run in seven innings to run his record to 17-6, while lowering his ERA to 3.36.
Wilson has won 13 of his last 14 decisions and has pitched to a 2.91 ERA over his last 18 starts. The 17 wins are also a career-high.
"We're just trying to throw a wrench in the works and keep everybody on the edge of their toes," said Wilson. "It's good television, I guess, when the season comes down to the last weekend.
"We're just trying to win as many games as we can and we have a lot of young guys on the team right now that are getting playing time at the big league level for the first time. So, it's good, because these games actually count, even though we're not in the playoff race, the other teams are that we're playing. We have to give it everything we have to make it fair."
For Seattle, it will turn to righty Felix Hernandez, who hasn't pitched since Sept. 2 due to an oblique strain. The former AL Cy Young Award winner, though, has lost his last four starts and is 12-9 on the year with a 3.01 ERA.
However, he's 2-1 in four starts versus the Angels this season and has pitched to a 3.00 ERA against them
Los Angeles has won the first two games of this set and on Saturday, Grant Green stroked a three-run double as part of a four-run second inning to help the Angels to a 6-5 win.
Collin Cowgill clubbed a solo homer and scored three times, while Andrew Romine added an RBI for the Angels, who have won three straight and six of their last seven games.
Jerome Williams (9-10) held Seattle to one run on five hits and as many walks while striking out five over 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win.
Ernesto Frieri secured his 36th save of the season, despite giving up a solo shot to Raul Ibanez in the ninth.
Joe Saunders (11-16) was tagged for all six runs on six hits over seven innings to absorb the loss.
"Joe threw the ball well," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said of his starter. "He had a rough inning and walked a couple, but he came back strong."
Nick Franklin collected two hits and scored twice for the Mariners, who have lost three straight and six of their last seven games.
The Angels have won 11 of 18 from the Mariners, a year after winning the 2012 season series, 11-8.
